I'm thinking about the same thing for my next bow, 40 - 50 #. I think that energy is overrated on medium sized animals like deer. Whether you have 50 ft lbs or 100 ft lbs of energy, the arrow will pass through expending none of this energy on the deer. Like MeanV said a few weeks back, he was forced to hunt with a 40# bow one year due to a shoulder injury. If I remember correctly he killed two deer that year and both were complete passthroughs.

Arrow speed has more to do with arrow weight than draw weight.

A 60# bow shooting a lighter arrow is often faster than a 70# bow shooting a heavier arrow.

My point is that you can shoot 60# and still shoot a smoking fast arrow too. Don't think you have to shoot 70# to be fast.

I've read that bows shoot best if at their peak weight. Just depends on what u r comfortable pulling. I just cranked mine up from 63# to 70#. Didn't notice 2 much of a difference in pulling, but shooting I defintely did. The arrows are flying flatter farther out-50 yds.

I think the performance of bows varies so much it's not as simple as 60 or 70.
With my two bows one would have to be set on 70 to have the power of the other set on 60.
One bow has an IBO rating of 344 and the other is rated at 320 (which is not slow).

PSE X Force 59# 29'' 340 gr. @ 315 F.P.S. = 75 LB of KE
Hoyt Katera XL 59# 29'' Z Cams 385 gr. @ 277 F.P.S. = 65 LB of KE

Pull 60 have the power of 70 if you choose the right bow. ;)

You are Right!!

I am Loving my BowTech 82nd Airborne. 60# 28" Draw producing over 70# KE. A Mouse Fart would rival the noise this bow makes, and it absolutely stacks the arrows. I am getting a 2nd one if that tells you how I feel about this Bow!

I know you've decided on a bow already butI have to say my peace.

Seems to me a lot of guys on here talk about arrow weight and momentum being the most important thing until someome asks what poundage of bow to shoot. Then, everyone tells a guy/girl to buy a low poundage bow and shoot a light arrow so they stilll have the speed. Ethically, you want to shoot the highest poundage bow you can comfortably shoot with at least a moderately weighted arrow.

An experienced archer knows that a new shooter can develope the muscles to handle the full poundage of a bow in a short time if they shoot enough. Therefore, telling someone that if you can not shoot 70 lbs right now you shouldn't buy a 60-70 bow is rediculous if that person has the physical capabilities of doing so.that being said if it's a new archer they probably should start with 50-60 to work on form.
