new string old cable
if i get a new string do i need a new cable. even if its in good shape?

You could replace both the string and cables and keep the old cables as backup if they're in good shape. That's what I did.

Even though the string looks better than the cables, and gets handled more, the cables usually carry twice the wieght and fatigue first. Well, thats for single cam. I would replace both. You don't have too. But if your cable has 2000 shots on it, its time.

I always replace them as a set. Unless there was an accident involved!;)

I think the cable winds up taking a lot more strain and force than the string. And it's harder to see damage to cables, unless you press the bow and pull them off the cams. For what little they cost, don't take a chance.
