Looks good

Looks very good. You are very clever when is comes to bow accessories. I just wonder how the cable guard will hold up to its new job.:)

It's looks good. However, doesn't thehalter impede the cable slide from coming back the whole way? On my Ally at full draw my stop is right where you've mounted the halter.

RE: Rustler™ string halter
Great idea! I saw that Darton has a sts type supressor attached to the cable guard also. I think it's a great way to add a suppresor for those of us who don't have a rear bushing in the riser. I hate the idea of putting a front mount sts on my bow, it's a lot of unnecesary bulk.

RE: Rustler™ string halter
I just took the Rustler;)apart and weighed it on my powder scale and it comes out at 628 grains or 1.437 ounces. My next stage will be to make one all out of rubber and it will just slide over the cable rod,,, someday..:D

I'd be interested in what change in speed you may see from adding that thing. Looks like a need idea, what's the BH on your bow??? I may start tinkering a bit as well.....

RE: Rustler™ string halter
It looks to me like you know your way around a milling machine. How about using Delrin instead of aluminum.
My idea was to machine a block with two parallel 3/8" dia. holes. One will clamp to the cable guard like yours and the other hole would clamp onto a very short rod with an EDS stopper on the end. It's killing me, the job that I have now only has one of those POS Enco mill/lathe. I wish that I had a bridgeport or better yet a Mazak in my garage. Check out the picture of the QD and Stabilizer that I machined on the enco. |

This is a rest I made out of Lexan and it's still going strong on the Old Glory I sold.

Here's another look.. Plastic is much easier to cut!

RE: Rustler™ string halter
You can always tell a true machinist, he uses socket head capscrews on everything.:DYou do nice work, are you a toolmaker by trade or just a hobbiest? What do you think of my idea? The bracket would look just like a STS mounting block except both holes would be 3/8" and a couple of set screws to hold the rods in place. The rod with the stopper on it would only have to be long enough to seat fully in the stopper with enough sticking out to fit in the mounting bracket.

RE: Rustler™ string halter
No I'm not a machinist, just like to play;) I'm sure your idea would work. I'd suggest to go with a clamping design for the bow's cable rod to prevent set screw damage and then a set screw for the STS rod. Your idea would lend it's self to different bow specs very well and I'm sure you'd get plenty of sales;)

RE: Rustler™ string halter
ORIGINAL: OHbowhntr I'd be interested in what change in speed you may see from adding that thing. Looks like a need idea, what's the BH on your bow??? I may start tinkering a bit as well..... The bow is a BowTech Guardian set at 60 pounds and a 29 inch draw with factory strings that include a loop, kisser and Simms Super Leaches with no peep installed in the string. I chronoed the bow with Easton LightSpeed 400's with blazers and 75 grain points that weigh 325 grains. The first average was 290 fps with an STS set up. The second average was also 290 fps with no STS. The third average was with my Rustler™string halter and it also did 290 fps.. No difference!! The next test was removing the Simms Super Leaches and running the same set ups.. The first average was 301 fps with just the STS. The second average was 302 fps with no STS. The third average was with only the Rustler and also averaged 301 fps. I was suprized that the Super Leaches was robbing my bow of 10 fps!! the STS was a little quieter but the rubber I used for the Rustler is not as soft as the STS stopper rubber. There is a definate improvement when using the Rustler as compared to nothing at all. I think my next project will be to make a slip-on, all rubber Rustler. It will probably look crude as it will be made using a belt sander but it's got to start somewhere. By the way, accuracy is great with the Rustler. I know better to shoot at the same spot at 20 yards with a BowTech but I was concentrating on testing for accuracy and how quiet the bow was,, then this happened[&:];) ![]() |
