Want/Need To Tune My Bow?
OK, so here is the scenario. I tuned my bow "to" my broadheads this past season. My field points were shooting great, but then when I went to broadheads, I was off pretty bad. Here is what I am shooting: 100gr field points/hitting about 6"right and low. 100gr Slick Tricks/hitting dead on out to 30yds and in, to, say 10yds(close as I have shot).
My question is where do I start? I want to retune for field points and then recheck with broadheads. I know there is more to it than some would care to explain, but I really want to do this (and be able to again if necessary). I will be back on later this evening. If someone with a lot of experience would like to help me thru PM's, that would be great. Anyway, thanks for the help in advance. Oh, and by the way, my bow is only a year old/string=6mths. Thanks, LT |
RE: Want/Need To Tune My Bow?
This is a good start. It's from the Easton Tuning Guide.
If your broadheads are hitting high and left, you need to raise your nocking point and move your rest toward the bow in small increments (1/32" at a time). Raise the nocking point first until BH's and FP's hit on the same elevation. Then move the rest toward the bow to fix the left/right problem. If the above doesn't work, you have an arrow spine problem. That can be fixed by new arrows, changing Draw weight, oradjusting tip weight. |
RE: Want/Need To Tune My Bow?
gzg is on the right track, but I'm gonna start simpler than that. If your slick tricks aren't grouping w/ your field points.....We need to just start over. The flight characteristics of the ST's are so good, you honestly shouldn't need to move anything, especially that much.
I see you are shooting 500 spine arrows, and your draw is pretty short.....Depending on how long those arrows are, they may be underspined @ 60#'s.......In fact, I would suspect at 60 #'s, unless they are like 24" long, they are underspined. I'm gonna head on over to easton's website and research that a little....Add that 100 grain point on there, and it makes them weaker still, than say a 75 grain head... Have you papertuned the bow with fieldpoints? Here's why I say what I do.....last year I shot slick tricks, out of a perfectly tuned bow @ nearly 320 fps....I screwed them on and shot them, they flew perfect. Hit right w/ my FP's.....You really should be able to do the same, and when things are off this much, sometimes it's best to just start over from scratch. Start w/ the basics......First let's find out how those arrows are....then we'll go from there..... |
RE: Want/Need To Tune My Bow?
Well, I stand corrected on that one...the 500's should be fine.....But let's still start w/ the basics.....Is the bow in centershot? Is it leveled? How does it papertune?

RE: Want/Need To Tune My Bow?
Mobow when I run his setup on OnTarget his arrows spine dead perfect. (assuming shaft lenght of 26" which is probably pretty close considering his DL is 26.5).
His speed is 234, not 292 like his signature says. 292 is more like the IBO speed. I'd start with the easy stuff first. Make sure centershot is correct and nock height is level. Then do what the picture says from there. By the way, if the arrows are much longer than 26" they could be getting a little on the weak side. |
RE: Want/Need To Tune My Bow?
mobow, my arrows are 25.5 inches from throat of nock to leading edge. "I" have never papertuned my bow. The proshop did while I watched.(Although this was done at only like 2yds from target) I really am leaning toward the centershot issue, but I am not sure. As far as "leveled", I have no idea what you are asking. LOL Maybe you can help coach me thru the process you use to find centershot and papertuning. (I believe I pretty much know how to papertune, but interested in your way) Help me out dude.
qzq38b, 292 is the speed that the Chrono showed 5 out of 5 shots with my arrow tipped with 100gr field point. "This Ain't Your Daddy's Bow" by the way. LOL[:-]I know myself and the proshop guy was delightfully surprised at the speed. But hey the Chrony is right on with all the other bows at the shop so? Anyway, the above info I gave mobow is where I am right now, so thanks if you can help. LT |
RE: Want/Need To Tune My Bow?
LT, I can all but promise you that's your problem. YOU need to paper tune your bow, the guy at the shop does not shoot it the same way you do. It's like having someone else sight in your rifle.....It just doesn't work.
Honestly bro....head down there and you do the shooting......Get that fixed, and I would be willing to bet your problems will be nearly solved. LT, when you're on....shoot me a PM.....We'll walk through it, or shoot....I'll give you my cell number and you can call me.....We'll get it figured out, it really is pretty simple. To figure centershot, w/out the tools..... nock an arrow, and if you have a fall away rest, pull the cord and raise it. Set the bottom cam on your foot and look down the front of the riser. The arrow should cut the limb bolts in half....Now, that's not 100% precise, but it'll get you close. As far as level.....The nock needs to be about 1/8" higher than perfectly level....In other words....if the arrow is perfectly level to the ground, the nock needs to be just a TICK higher....not much bro...That will get you very close to where you need to be.... |
RE: Want/Need To Tune My Bow?
mobow, that sounds like a plan to me. Do you think I could do this on my own at home? I have the necessary stuff to do it. It's just a matter of doing it right.
Thanks, LT |
RE: Want/Need To Tune My Bow?
Yeah LT, you could get it close....w/out a paper tuner it's gonna be tough to get perfect, but you can get it close.
Then you can head to the yard and do some walk back tuning... |
