SPOT-HOGG RIGHT ON REVIEW (pics)

After an exhaustive search to upgrade my Montana Black Gold hunting sight, I bought this Spot-Hogg Right on. I was looking for the best, rugged, well made sight on the market. I think I found it.

The MBG is a great sight, and has done its job well for almost seven years. But in the interest of stirring this great nation’s economy, it was time to shell out some bucks.

Construction: The Right-on is made entirely of machined 6061 aircraft aluminum. It is the most solid, well built hunting site I have ever seen. Dovetails are held down by ¼-20 allen bolt. When cranked down they are going nowhere, period.

Pins: The pins are also 6061 Alum. And are the strongest pins I have found. These pins are .019, and do not bend. They seem to hold good light though I have not tried to shoot outdoors at dusk – too darn cold!

Finish: Spot-Hog sells there sights like Ford used to sell there first Model-T, You can get it in any color you want, as long as it’s black. The Iridite seems solid, I guess time will tell. Camo would be a real bonus.

Adjustability: Gang adjustments are beefy dovetails and slide very easily. Micro-pin adjustments are a little more complicated than other sights I have use. Because of the angled pin bodies, you have to adjust both the windage and elevation. Horizontal adjustments are done by a set of allen bolts, you back one out and tighten the other. Windage elevations are simply done by tightening or loosening the silver allen bolt.
Not bad at all once you get the hang of it, and once they are set they will not move.

Weight : At 5.76 ounces it weighs only .4 ounces more than a trophy ridge flatliner extreme. Not bad at all for a 100% alum sight.

Noise: None

This sight comes with a vertical ss steel wire running through the pin guard. It seems strong, though is probably the week link of the sight. I have never used one before, but so far I like the vertical line.

The Spot-Hoggs are IMO some of the very best built sights available, solid as a rock and well worth the $90.00 bucks.

Sweet review Rack! Those angled pins look like the ticket for the faster bows that have such a small drop btw. 20-25-30etc. ot sure I get the center wire though??? Is that a landmark for ease of sighting in or what?

I bought the SH Sure-Thing last Sept and truely love it. Your review was spot on accurate! Yes the sight is pricey. But then I don't buy a gadget every week and then throw it in the tackle box to buy something else. When I do buy, I want it to last. No questions asked.
I'm happy.

Thanks for the review. Well done!

How many pins did it come with and how much are additional ones, if I may ask? I love yellow and green. I can hardly see red for some reason. Thanks!

Chief,

I think all there sights come with 5 pins. The right-on comes with 2 red, 2 yellow and 1 green. I cannot see red either so I took those off and will use the green/yellow pins. I think new sets are around 20 bucks. It would not be hard though to feed any .019 fiber into the posts to custom make a pin. I have some amber .019 fiber I am going to insert into a post and see how that comes out.

Thanks Rack! What's up with the red? I haven't figured that out yet. Let me know how that works out (putting in that custom color).

I do like the spot hoggs! I'm thinking about getting the hogg-it with either the 6" or 9 1/2" extension. Nice looking sights and built very tough!

You gave a very good review of the site. I really liked that. I have two Spot Hogg products here at the house. I've got the Hogg It and the BareBones.

I liked both of them because of their sleek look and sturdyness. BUT. The one thing I don't like about the pins on the sights, are what most people like about them. The turoc (sp) system. I like being able to move each individual pin, in our out BUT moving it up or down to the exact elevation that you need, can be a pain. Having to loosen one screw and tighten the other...while not moving it too far...yeah that gets old. LOL.

For most people the red doesn't show as well, but it isn't hard to change out. I use the .029 and have yellow green and orange which really works well. It also seems that the .029 shows up better for my old eyes.

Crow Terminator-

Welcome to our fine discussion forum and thanks for adding your opinions. I thought the adjustments sounded a little cumbersome. Once you get your pin gaps set you really don't have to mess with that adjustment though; correct?
