Painting a bow riser

Hi, was thinking of painting my riser flat black then clear coating it, does anyone know if there is special paint i should use or can i just use regular auto primer, thanks for any responses.

I think I just used Rustoleum when I painted my old magnesium riser Jennings years ago. Painting a dipped finish shouldn't be a problem but getting paint to stick to anodized aluminum might be tricky. You could use an aluminum etching primer first (available for marine applications). I think I'd avoid the clearcoat since it'll tend to gloss the finish.

If you can find anyone in your area set up to apply the Dura Coat finish (most likely will be a gunsmith); it is a great finish to apply on aluminum. Doesn't require baking and wears like iron. Should only cost you $25 or so. Comes in many colors, including flat black.

so would i be better off having the riser powder coated flat black. the riser is sanded and ready to be finished, just not sure if i should paint it or powder coat it

Powder coat would be very durable as well. More costly, I would suspect.
