Does let-off % impact speed?
 

I'm just curious.....My bow has adjustable let-off, 65 and 75%. Does the lower % equate to more speed, or does the higher, or is there no real impact to speak of?

The letoff should have a very minimal effect on speed. More letoff will reduce your speed just a little.

It has a much greater effect when you've got cams with a gradual let-off than it does with cams that have a sudden drop. If you shoot a bow that just dumps you into the stops once it breaks over, it won't have hardly any effect on speed.

My biggest problem with high let-off is it makes it real hard for me to keep good back tension. I need some holding weight to keep my back involved in the shot.

Hm, that's interesting. The cams on mine don't dump right to the valley, and to drop to 65% I'm still only holding 24 pounds....Think I'll mess around w/ this at the shop tonight, just for fun....Thanks guys.

As Arthur mentioned, holding weight is a larger factor in my shot sequence than the actual draw weight of the bow or the actual letoff.

I prefer a holding weight right around 18-19#. This means that on my target rig with 65% cams that I end up with a peak draw weight of right around 54#. For my 75% letoff hunting bow, that puts the draw weight at about 72#.

When I don't have enough holding weight, my shot is not steady enough. With too much, I end up getting fatigue earlier than I would like.

The Binary cams are faster at 80% let off than they are at 65%;)It depends on the cams. I'd shoot whatever was the mostcomfortable.

One thing to consider is when you have adjustable letoff,it usually rquires you to move a peg or something similar back a noth wich in effect,makes the draw length slightly longer which will nullify the loss in speed that usually comes with a higher letoff specific cam.

Of course you have the longer draw to consider and you need to be shooting the correct draw length first.

Ive never owned a bow with more than 60% let off. But have worked on many that do. It will effect the speed very little. If you changeyour letoff, be sure to make the appropriate adjustment, then check everything agian like tiller, cam time, etc..
