Will a 60lb do the Job??
I'm looking at bows and found some used ones, but the best priced one is a 50-60lb. Would that do to kill big animals( Deer, and maybe an Elk one day) I know shot placement kills, not speed. Just wanted a 60-70 to bump it up past 60 though. Thanks David

RE: Will a 60lb do the Job??
I shoot a 58 pound bowtech 543 grain arrow at 250 FPS, will kill anything in North America.
|
RE: Will a 60lb do the Job??
I have two 61 lb. bows; and am going Bison hunting in January. Not the least bit concerned.
|
RE: Will a 60lb do the Job??
I'm currently shooting around 54 lbs (245 FPS) and I've never had any issues. This year I took my deer (a fairly large bodied whitetail buck) at 35 yards with a complete pass through...
Used to shoot closer to 70lb but some old sports injuries to my shoulders started acting up - so I backed it off and have never looked back. |
RE: Will a 60lb do the Job??
It did a number on my elk this year , 62 pounds , 28 inch draw , 525 grain arrow , g5 strikers , he went 40 yards and fell in sight after a complete passthru

RE: Will a 60lb do the Job??
I'm on the same page as everyone else..... 60 pounds is more than enough bow.
|
RE: Will a 60lb do the Job??
Ive gone from 80, down to 70, down to 60, back to 70, and next year I'm going back down to 60. Dont need anything more.

RE: Will a 60lb do the Job??
"THANK YOU" all so much for the replys,I"m sold on it. May even save my shoulder so I can shoot longer too! Also never killed a deer and always heard that when you draw back on one the excitement makes it hard to pull back what you thought you could do with a breeze when not shooting at a deer! Thanks again,David

RE: Will a 60lb do the Job??
60# Bows will more than Git-R-Done!;)My Wife shot a Doe last year with her 40# Equalizer and got a Pass through:DMy 60# Allegiance is producing over 68# KE plenty of power to spare;)

RE: Will a 60lb do the Job??
60Lbs bows are all I buy. I have never had a problem with penetration. If you can’t take down critters with it, it’s not the bows poundage that’s the problem.
|
RE: Will a 60lb do the Job??
i shoot 63 lbs. and have had nothing but pass throughs even on 600 lbs. neilgi..... besides im not an expert but you will get a tad more than 60 out of a 60 lb. bow i think... but someone here might know more about that....
|
RE: Will a 60lb do the Job??
i went down to 52# this year and had pass theu shots on all 4 deer that i got
|
RE: Will a 60lb do the Job??
I would say that 60# is enough poundage. That's all i buy.

RE: Will a 60lb do the Job??
I don't know about all bows; but I have three 50/60's. With the limbs maxed out, they vary from 60.7 to 62.1 lbs.
|
RE: Will a 60lb do the Job??
I don't think that your bows should go higher than 60 if you bow is only rated 50-60# or maybe i'm wrong but i thing it isn't timed properly.

RE: Will a 60lb do the Job??
Mat it’s typical of most bows to max out 1 to 5 lbs over stated max weight.
|
RE: Will a 60lb do the Job??
Yes, It will "do the job"...;)
|
RE: Will a 60lb do the Job??
Shoot what you are comfortable with. New bows these days have so much let off you may want to go higher than 60. It doesn't hurt to have more KE and penetration, just don't go too high where you feel strained.
|
RE: Will a 60lb do the Job??
I am thinking of going with a 60 lb. bow this year. I think I will be able to get the best performance since I will shoot it maxed out.
|
RE: Will a 60lb do the Job??
I shoot 65#, but it is certainly more than enough.
|
RE: Will a 60lb do the Job??
I am shooting a 60 lb. bow.I shoot a montec and my arrow passes through deer and sticks itself 12 inches in the ground. 60 lbs. is plenty. Don't get caught up in all the talk of K.E. and arrow speed. If you shoot a good broadhead and can put the arrow in the right spot, you will be fine. All Ted Nugent shoots is 50 lbs. and he gets a pass thru almost every time.
|
RE: Will a 60lb do the Job??
Hey Thanks again for the info.,I bought the 50-60lb.
David |
RE: Will a 60lb do the Job??
Shooting only 57#s with a XX78 2117 an magnus buzzcut head for a total of 545 grs. I think you you have to take into account your total setup.....bow , arrow , broadhead and see how it performs together!

RE: Will a 60lb do the Job??
20 years ago, I used an 80 pound bow. Now I've got a 60 pounder that is pretty similar in all respects to that old bow, except it's got more efficient wheels and has about 2" less brace height - 8" vs 10". This late model 60 pound bow shoots the same exact arrow the same exact speed as that old 80 pounder did. Back then, nobody ever asked if 80 pounds was enough to do the job.

That's why I use a 60 pound bow now instead of an 80. Oldfartitis in my shoulders, ya know. [8D]

RE: Will a 60lb do the Job??
When I first started bow hunting and for several years I shot 78 lbs and the arrow would pass through both lungs on a whitetail deer.
Now I shoot 64 in warm weather and 60 in cold weather and the arrow still passes through both lungs, but it is a little easier to pull out of the ground. My 60 lb. switchback will pull above 64 lbs. |
RE: Will a 60lb do the Job??
same here shoot 62 pds. I can easily pull back 80pd limbs that my buddy has but i just find that i have alot better form right off the bat with an easier pulling bow.

RE: Will a 60lb do the Job??
no reason for it not to !!!

RE: Will a 60lb do the Job??
if you're mostly going to hunt Deer, a 45# is about the minimum i'd dare to use. i'm shooting a 65# with 2315 aluminum shaft arrows with 125gr 3 blade fixed broadheads and i'm confident that i could take most things in North America with it. (maybe not buffalo)
the thing to remember is that you're shooting razor blades. cutting into an animal isn't a problem. just try not to hit a shoulder blade and you should be fine |
RE: Will a 60lb do the Job??
I was just watching an old Ted Nugent Spirit of the Wild episode last night on Mossyoak.com and he is a huge proponent for shooting light, smooth bows. They were moose hunting and he was shooting a 53 lb bow and his son was shooting a 50 lb bow with no problems.
