Ashby has another great article on broadhead performance

More really good info, this time on the effectiveness of single-bevel broadheads.

Fasinating reading , Think some of the manufacturers will provide these ?

From what I hear, there are a few manufacturers that pay very close attention to his studies. I'm not sure when any of this will become mainstream knowledge, but I'm hoping it's quick. The information he is providing is eye-opening and disspelling many myths of arrow lethality.

Interesting stuff!!!

Perhaps the few companies that "spiral" their blades (Rocky turbo, Rocket, Crimson Talon, etc.) also create a degree of mechanical advantage. Of course these heads are not near as heavy and have multiple blades thus theoretically having less energy and more drag.

Thanks for sharing....

I know of one that does a single bevel.

Matter of fact I have 2 dozen of them on order just waiting for them to arrive.

Thanks for the info Ausie-guy. I got a bit excited about a screw-in with single bevel, until I saw that they were in Austrailia. I might be willing to wait on delivery if they had the higher weights I prefer. Grizzly must have single-bevel broadheads since that's what Ashby uses. I don't think they have the screw-in type, but you can get an adapter to attach them. The added benefit of the adapter is the abilityto really up the FOC if you want.

I'm pretty much set on what I'm going to shoot out of the 3 bows I'll hunt with this year. I might order some Outbacks to play around with and shoot them out of my longbow.

Bob, I think you may have wanted to link to this one.

http://www.tradgang.com/ashby/2005update3.pdf

At the bottom shows a pile of broken broadheads he accumulated one year. He's tested many modern broadheads shot through many modern bows. I suspect he'll continue to test new ones as he can, but with the huge number hitting the market each year, it will be extremely difficult for anyone to test them all on animals.

The Supremes but the 170gr are not listed on the site

Apparently the supply of heavier ones is a bit irregular at this point. He told me he could get me some at 160 gr within a week. Adding a 50 grain insert weight would get close enough to the Phantoms to make them work fine, I'm guessing.

The good news - he told me within a couple months he'll have them in the 220-250 gr range. Too late for this season, but next year...

Just double checked. Nope the one I listed was the one I meant to.

Bob, yes your link is the better article. I hadn't realized it was an "update" article. It contains some real good info I hadn't read before. I recognized some of the graphs and thought it was an older article.

Amazing that his data actully showed that penetration went down as KE went up. This data referred to arrows that obtained their higher KE by being lighter and faster. This is some very thought provoking info.
