Broadhead Penetration?
I shoot a 45 pound bow and was considering using expandable broadheads this year. Do you think that is enough poundage to get a successful amount of penetration with expandables?

RE: Broadhead Penetration?
The only expandable I'd even consider at that weight is Rocket Steelheads, and even then I wouldn't consider it long. Get some Magnus Stingers. They are about your best bet at 45 lbs.

hehe he said pentration.......:D

RE: Broadhead Penetration?
Definitely not enough poundage to even think about it. I now shoot about 53# to 55# and I won't take the chance. I wouldn't use a mechanical head with anything less than 65#.

RE: Broadhead Penetration?
Hi-I have hunted with 45pds my self-shoulder surgery-.I kept my safe distance to 25 yards.I shot 2 deer with muzzys.I wouldnt shoot a expanding type,i was afraid of it not opening. That just my experience.--AND AS FOR BEING A LADIE--GLAD TOO HAVE YA AROUND!!:)

RE: Broadhead Penetration?
Thanks muzzyman. I should be getting my bow pundage increased to 50 here pretty soon so I can put some more energy into those arrows

RE: Broadhead Penetration?
It is my understanding that some of the female celebrity archers are shooting the Rage 2 blade expandable from bows in the 45 to 50 pound class with good results. But there are so many good COC heads out there . . . the G5 Montec, Hellrazor, Magnus, Muzzy, etc. If your bow shoots them well I wouldn't even bother with the expandable.

RE: Broadhead Penetration?
My grandfather shot a deer 2 yrs ago with a mechanical broadhead and a bow set at 50lbs. Was not pleased at all with the penetration or the damage but like they say, hit them in the right spot and they'll go down.He still shoots a mechanical but idisagree. Iwould recommend afixed blade. In my opinion thereare to many things to worry about witha low poundage like that and the kinetic energy being used to just open the blades. With a fixed broadhead more of your energy will be put towards knock down power and you know what your getting.

RE: Broadhead Penetration?
In your situation I believe you will increase your odds of a kill if you use a fixed blade broadhead. I would also recommend a simple two-blade design. You should have plenty of power to make clean kills, if you make the right decisions. An arrow on the heavy side will also help with penetration.

RE: Broadhead Penetration?
Penetration is gonna be your number one challenge. I'm going to a heavier arrow and Magnus Stingers this year due to previous experience with penetration problems.

RE: Broadhead Penetration?
I am using a carbon arrows 30-50 and 100 grain fixed blade broadheads. Last year i shot a doe and my bow was set even lower. it had about 10 inches of penetration then. I have heard of people killing deer with 35 pound bows so i figured i had enough power.

RE: Broadhead Penetration?
I agree with straightarrow , a fixed cut on contact 2 blade head , like a magnus stinger , or stealfource , or bear razorhead would be ideal for you setup , make sure they are so sharp you are scared of them
|
RE: Broadhead Penetration?
I would probably suggest a fixed blade as well. With that said I think a one of the 2 blade slip cam style mechanicals would work just fine. Try the Rage or the Rocky Mtn Snyper, they require less energy to open and if you got up to about 50lbs you would be fine with either of those.

RE: Broadhead Penetration?
im a diehard mechanical shooter but on my wifes bow i put rocket unltimate steel. they are small and fly great at the speed her bow shoots and since she doesnt shoot past 25yds. but when i was younger i used the rocket wolverine until the steelhead came out with no problems and actually alot of pass throughs to me arrow placement is the most important thing esp with low poundage bows.
