50-60 lb or 60-70 lb ?? Pro 38 or Ultratec ??
 

In the past I was told that if I was planning on shooting 60 lbs that I should buy a bow rated 50-60 lb and NOT 60-70 lbs backed down to 60. Does this still hold true with the newer designed bows? I have always shot around the 65 to 70 lb range with round wheel bows. I am planning to buy a short bow and was wondering if I really need anything over 60 lbs. Have been looking at the Bowtech Pro 38 and the Hoyt Ultratec. Any input will be appreciated.

You didn't mention what you were going to use the bow for (spots/3d/hunting...)

Assuming you're after an 'all in one' bow I think you would be well suited with either of these bows. I switched from Hoyt to BowTech a year ago & haven't looked back. I've got about 50,000 arrows through my Pro38 and IT IS AWESOME!!!!

I picked up a Patriot for hunting & didn't notice a decrease in accuracy - but did notice a 4" decrease in ATA & a bit less kick....

As for the poundage , you'll have to draw a few and see what feels comfortable. As for the bow type , it's really a personal preference thing. I shot a few bowtechs , mathews , and hoyts before deciding on the hoyt ultratec. I wouldn't call the ultratec or pro 38 "a short bow".

OOPS Sorry for not being clearer in my questions!! I would be using the bow only for hunting. As for poundage I have always been a finger shooter and can pull and hold 75 lbs without any trouble even in 15 degree weather.My concern here is that much poundage needed with the new bows? I call 37 inch bows short because the two bows that I hunt with are 46 and 48 inches A to A. I am going to shoot my new bow with a release just for something different to do. I recently shot a friends bow with all the bells and whistles and thought it might be fun to shoot a different style. I am also having some arthritis problems in my fingers. I can forsee a time when I may HAVE to hunt using a release. I could not get over the consistency that my friends bow shot with me shooting it, even though it was not set up for me. Thought I was shooting a cro$$b*w vertically. Thank again for the input!!!

To be fair, Huntemup, you should explain that you went from a low-end Hoyt to a high-end Bowtech. Maybe look into the Pro 40 Dually for top speeds with a 60 pounder. The bow is actually 38 inches ATA with an IBO of 329 to 337. Good luck.

Just to let you know I have a like new 2002 Pro 38 for sale right now. 60 Pound model. I'm practically giving it away. Let me know if you are interested.

Now that's out of the way <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>..I don't think you could go wrong with either bow, they both are solid, dependable, accurate models.

I just picked up my Hoyt Ultratec last month and love it I got it with 60 lb max and on the scale it's reading 63lb really shots good I don't think you can call the Ultratec a short bow
