Need New String

I took my Martin up to BassPro the other night to have them replace my string. Both of the archery department guys suggested that I don't buy a string from BassPro but buy a custom made string from some local guy named mike stenger in cincinnati.

My question is what is wrong with the strings at BassPro and what makes a custom string so good? Does a string really make that big of a difference?

I called that guy and he said that he has been making custom strings for over 20 years and the price with installation is $35.00. What do you guys recommend?

If you can get a set of strings installed for 35 take him up on it . It all depends on what type of materials are being used in the strings and also a lot on what type of equipment they use to make the strings that can make the difference between a string being a headache or a string being a godsend. A good string will use top quality fibers that have low stretch . A good string will also be served under tension so that you have very little if any shoot in time and will not give you peep rotation till it is time to change the string again. I cant tell what type of materials Bass pro uses for their strings or what type of process they use to make them but it all makes a difference in the end product.

i agree with archer 2 most stock strings are a piece of junk ......for $35 installed you should jump on it then tell me if the string doesn't make a difference....

When the guys at the bass pro shop tell you not to buy something they sell, I would tend to lessen. Custom strings are great, if made right. This guy sounds like he would be a better choice for you.

Whats wrong with BPS strings.... at least at the BPS near me, they don't sell them anymore. Since BPS is a big corporation, if they take strings out of one... then they will likely take strings out of all of them.... why.... I don't know.

$35 for custom made string/cables is DIRT CHEAP.

This guy owns a pretty well known archery store here in Cincinnati. He said that he has been custom making strings for over 20 years now. After some research online I have read nothing but good things about his custom strings. If anyone is interested his name is Mike Stenger his number is 513-941-1306.

Im thinking of buying gibblet's strings. I havn't heard a bad thing about them and its cheap.

Anyway, should i upgrade my factory cables as well? I dunno, do they stretch (like fluctuate) or do they just stretch out? I figure i need to replace the cable if it stretches more than the string.

If I were you I would replace the cable also. The cables take a beating
