Is there such a thing as......

a proper length ofcenter serving?

I noticed that my serving is 7 1/16" long. My arrow nocks 2 9/16" from the top of my center serving. Also, I noticed that mykisser buttonis over the center serving instead of above it.

What's every body else have?

Could you clarify that or post a pic? I don't understand.

WHOOPS! My kisser button....not my peep. I will change my post. That would be interesting though.

Can you say mass produced? This is why custom string are worth there weight in gold. If you use a good string make they can make it how you want.

i recently reserved mine. only about 3" or so long. just enough to cover the bits that touch anything. should reduce the weight on the string a bit too.

RE: Is there such a thing as......

It should be long enought to protect the string from fraying, if the string hits your sleeve (arm). It should also be long enough to keep the serving from moving or separating. Short servings have a tendency to move a tiny bit, and that is very bad for accuracy. Long doesn't hurt anything. It just adds a tiny bit of weight to the string.

mdbuckhunter, i'm a little perplexed. you're giving string advice to a fellow in another thread - and you don't seem to know too much about them.

John: Play nice or you'll get a reputation like me.;)

Let meadd some more information that might 'stir the pot'.
1. Serving added to keep the string from hitting your clothing or armmay protect the string while ignoring the real problem of too long a draw length or very poor form.
2. Some custom strings leave a lot to be desired. I've had some that have incorrectly terminated serving, incorrectly 'placed' serving, and incorrect lengths. And this is from some of the best known string makers out there.A serving has to be long enough to accomodate a kisser and equally long enough on the downside for proper termination and balance.
3. String loops seem to be such easy items to install. We have, however, seen such aplethora of bad efforts that all I do is smile anymore when customers complain about their problems with loops. Properinstallation technique coupled with proper tools (custom made) and a good materialmakes for happy customers. I've taught this several times in my seminars.

John/Bucknasty makes some good strings with good serving/technique.

hehehehe, i think its too late to help me len, but i appreciate it.
hey, i'm going to do some work tomorrow nightw/ proving or disproving the floating yoke on a split limb bow. i don't think they float anymore. i'm gonna take some pics - and then move on to short and long ata solid limb bows in the near future. i'm going to use the tool you designed and take some pics. may ruffle a few feathers there too - may prove myself wrong.

John:

If you have the right lasers there are a lot of things you can do with that tool.:D

I've found some interesting things concerning the floating yoke system and split harnesses in general. After you've done your analysis we might want to share some notes.;)

I justdesigned a special vise that will hit the market soon. If you like the other tool, you'll love this one.

I've seen a lot of different techniques for tying on string loops. Many forget the true function of the loop and try to make it too difficult/elaborate. Just as in soldering/welding, more is not always better.

mdbuckhunter, i'm a little perplexed. you're giving string advice to a fellow in another thread - and you don't seem to know too much about them.

I am going to respond as respectfully as I can....

I am asking what other serving styles people are using because I have seen a few that I question. Example, I just saw a 2" serving for the arrow/loop and then a 2" serving for the kisser, all on the same string. I have also seen a 10"-14" serving that goes from the bottom of the peep all the way down to the STS.

I do my own center servings and I truly enjoy satisfaction I get when I produce something that holds up to any abuse I give it. I also enjoy trying different serving styles out to see what works and what doesn't. Hence my question.

I recently switched from 22 series GT nocks to pin nocks. Two robin hoods this year made me switch. What can I say...I like shooting groups. I found that my Halo serving was too thin. So I needed to remove it. All I have in my archery box is Poly from when I purchased my serving jig. So, as I am sitting here serving I decided to reflect on all the different servings I have seen. Suddenly an idea pops into my head that maybe this would be a good post to make. Maybe somebody else does something that I haven't thought about that I could try.

You will see in a recent post that I had a serving placed on my bow by a shop employee. I had them place the serving on because I was going to shoot techno hunt later that day. My loop started sliding, my arrow wouldn't nock all that well....I failed to ask what type of serving they put on. My conclusion was Halo but I couldn't prove it.

So, in no means are my words the words of the bible. On the same hand, just because you make strings...it doesn't make you an expert either.

Have a nice day.

Yes and yes. I suspect it was the 0.019" Halo braided Spectra. I could have further tested the string by putting it in our tensile machine at work and seeing if it broke at 70lbs. But, my cat got it and destroyed it. At least it went to good use!

Geez, I take a week off for a vacation and I see things don't seem to change and certain people proclaim themselves as a mod or admin when theyaren't either.

The only string advice I've ever heard Josh give or post was from a reputable source concerning the replacement of a string. He was quoting the source and not saying it was his advice.

As I've stated before: Until they make you a mod or an admin on here I think you need to stop calling people out or at least quote them properly. Also, it'sextremely bad form to carry stuff over toother threads which seems to be a habit. If you do not like what someone is saying then ignore it or respectfully offer your professional opinion. I really see no need to try and make yourself feel better in your little world by trying to belittle someone.

This is old and worn out already and reminds me of high school. Someone needs to call the bully hotline or go to the website.

I've said whatI had to say and won't respond to any replies.
