RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
Greg,
I have not read this thread until now. I have one question for you. Why do you tie your tie-in nocksets right on either side of the arrow nock? I tend to leave a bit of a gap between the bottom of the arrow nock and the bottom tied-in nockset as it tends to provide less arrow pinch at full draw. Thoughts? Thanks. |
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
great info...love the detail
|
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
Frank,
It certainly wouldn't hurt to leave a slight amount of space there between the nock and the nocksets; I've just never felt it to be necessary with this setup. You can see in that last pic where I'm at full draw that the string inside the loop is almost perpendicular to the arrow nock, which basically serves to eliminates any nock pinch. |
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
You should make pdf files out of these great pearls of advice!
|
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
Thanks Greg for the good directions and photos. I believe now, I am ready to start tying off my own D loops....
|
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
Thanks for the post Greg. I will have to try your method.
|
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
where can you get stuff like that??
|
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
I assume you're meaning the materials used in this demo? I buy my d-loop from a lady named Catherine who goes by redhdcharm on the forums... her e-mail address is
Now that Miss Catherine has joined HuntingNet, I can link to her thread in our own classifieds... :) http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=2471478 |
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
Hi Greg!
I must say that this is THE BEST, most explanatory, well organized, beneficialand precise tutorial I have ever seen or read! Reallyexemplary job!!! It must have been a real challenge but it sure is a wonderful gift to all archer's. Thank you Greg and thank you for the recommendation. I am now here on huntingnet. |
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
Thanks Greg for the detailed information. You presented superbly and easy to follow. All thumbs up here.:):):)

RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
Great thread Greg, Thank you again.
|
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
I tell everyone I can about this thread. It is such a service to all archer's and the best tutorial out there.
And I have to thank you Greg for letting me put the link in my thread. That was so thoughtful and I appreciate it. I think EVERYONE should see this tutorial.... in a magazine perhaps! :D ;) ~~ |
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
Simply Excellent Explanation.Thanks Alot
|
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
Greg, I got my material from Catherine last week and followed your instructions to the "t" and man it turned out good. Those nocksets top and bottom do make a difference, seems the loop doesn't pinch the arrow like it did before. My wife liked it so much she wants me to order some more colorful string and thread and redo her bow. Thanksagain.
|
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
Thanks alot, just finished tying my D-Loop and it works great.
|
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
Greg, How do you tie the bottom nock set? Do you do the same as you did with the top one except upside down? I can't seem to "wrap" my brain around this.
|
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
Wow this just helped me a lot I think I am going to try this out this weekend because I would love to tie my own d-loops.
|
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
Geronimo, I tie the bottom nockset exactly as I did the top one -- with the exception that I make eight wraps instead of four.
If you look at picture # 4, you'll see I'm about to make my fourth wrap before inserting that tag end into the loop created by the dental floss. I'll then pull that tag end back through and UNDER the wraps I just made. On the bottom nockset, I don't pull that tag end back through until after I've made eight wraps. |

RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
I use the same loop of dental floss to make both the top and bottom nocksets... it's just used as a "placeholder" in essence, though it does serve the function of pulling that tag end back through and under the wraps.
But I use two entirely different pieces of nock point tying thread for each nockset. They are two individual and different nocksets, just tied the exact same way save the number of wraps to complete each one... with those of course being four wraps to make the top one and eight wraps to make the bottom one. |
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
I will try it as soon as my tying material comes...Thanks Greg!
|
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
Greg, I did it....even though my non-analytical brain had a hard time wrapping around your instructions. Finally, when it clicked it was perfect. Now, I probably need to redo my peep sight because it is rotating all over the place. Thanks again for you patience and great instructions!
|
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
I found one of those TRU speed nocks (plastic screw on nock point thing with the little tab that aligns the peep)
are these worth using? I was thinking about using one, tying the bottom nockset, and then tying a loop around this. Would this benefit me in any way? |
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
Way to go, Geronimo!!
badger, no harm in trying it to experiment... it's the only way you'll know if YOU like it or not. ;)Trust me, the guys like me who've been at this for a couple decades or longer have tried most everything; it's the reason we know what we like and what we don't. :) |
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
badger, I just took off the Tru-Nok because it was too loud and eventually would become problematic because of the metal to metal contact. Also, Greg's way of tying your nock set is the best way to nock your arrow using a D-loop.
|
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
How does the tie in noc system work without the D-Loop? Is the set up the same, but without the loop?
|
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
Yes... if you didn't want to tie the loop on, the nocksets could be tied on exactly the same way. In fact, if I were to shoot "off the string", I'd probably only tie on one nockset andhook my releaseon directly underneath the arrow's nock... I'd give it a whirl anyway, since one of the reasons I first went to a loop was because I was wearing through "eliminator buttons" or cushion buttons so quickly and I was seeing POI (point of impact) changes.
Tieing in a single nockset and ridding yourself of the brass nock would save you a few grains as far as weight on the string. |
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
While all you Gentlemen are tying in your nocks and D-Loop
I have just figured out how to link Greg's amazing tutorial in my signature. I don't think any archer shouldmiss this tutorial. It's IS a must see! ;)Thank you Greg for the link instructions! I am most appreciative! |
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
I finally got around to tying new D-loops on all my bows with the materials you sent me last month. Great stuff! Has the least stretch of any loop material I use so far. Thanks Redhdcharm :)
|
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
I got a new set of cables and strings about 2 months ago from gibblet and have been dying to get it going. Finally got them on and with this thread decided it was time to try some stuff on my own. Never done it before, but I had my nockset and Dloop tied in, in 15 min. Thanks for the tutorial for dummies, very well explained.
PS Thanks Catherine(aka redhedcharm) for the super fast turn around on nock tthread. Excellent service. |
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
i used .020 serving thread instead of the nock tying thread
The nockpoints are smaller, and the release isn't exactly behind the nock (pretty close though). Will this be a problem? I don't think I'm getting nock pinch or anything. the bow seems to shoot good. I don't think i have the centershot and stuff perfect yet, but I havn't paper or walk back tuned yet. The bow seems good, but I am a little rusty. |
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
Roskoe and John, You both are more than welcome. ;)It was completely my pleasure doing business with you Gentlemen. And I am very glad that you like the BCYmaterial. Thank you very much for the kind words and orders.
Between Greg's beautifully detailed tutorial and some good material I think everyone is good to go!!! :D |
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
Great Post. Just ordered my things from Catherine and received them in the mail today and got home and put a new D loop on my bow.
Great tutorial. Thanks Greg!! |
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
Another satisfied reader. Had two shops tie one on for me, one was 10 ft long the other rotated freely around the string, so I opted for your thread and to do it myself...It worked like a charm. Rock solid Dloop and as short as possible. Couldnt squeeze a hair between my release head and nock, lol. I like it short, and I can still hook up instantly without looking. Your short loops work PERFECT for open hook releases.
|
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
Wow... Greg thanks man, I've learned alot reading your posts. I just ordered my D-Loop string, ready to try it out...
|
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
greg,
great write up!!! i noticed that you have a bowtech and have a muzzy zero effect on there. quick question on that. did you set your nock point square (90 degrees) or is your nock point high? |
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
THANK YOU very much Noah and Chris for your orders (I appreciate it) and the impeccable, spot on transactions!
Sure was a pleasure doing business with you Gentlemen!! :D ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ HAPPY BIRTHDAY Greg!! May all you contribute to archery and archer's come back to you tenfold this birthday year! ;) |
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
Greg - My first year posting on the boards this year. Want to say a quick thanks for the tutorial and level of detail. Just yesterday I took my bow to get a loop. (Never shot with one before) If I read this a day sooner.. I would have saved some cash. I hate farming out tasks with hunting or fishing gear.
Thanks again! |
RE: How to tie in nocksets and a D-loop
Great post .This is the first time I have ever seen it explained so well. Thanks
