HIT inserts and Field Points/BHs
Just picked up some 400 FMJ shafts to fletch up for the upcoming fall. A gent in the shop was in the market for some new broadheads and we struck up a conversation about the FMJs and broadhead use. He said he had busted a couple of heads (Rage, Muzzy and a Grim Reaper) because the ferrels were not long enough for the HIT insert. Something to that effect.
At any rate, I got some field points and noticed that they WILL NOT fit into the shaft of the 400 FMJs. They are 100gr 9/32". The ferrel is too great a diameter to go down into the arrow shaft. I am concerned that my broadheads may not fit and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on compatability of field points and broadheads with the HIT inserts on FMJ arrows? |
RE: HIT inserts and Field Points/BHs
According to Easton a 17/64" outside is required with the FMJ's. On that note, I believe that most broadheads are made to fit any shaft. And do not believe that Easton would not have thought of this issue during design. Best thing to do is screw in a broadhead and see if it fits.

RE: HIT inserts and Field Points/BHs
If Easton recommends and supplies 17/64" tips for the 400's and smaller FMJ's and 9/32" for sizes larger then that wouldn't it be a wise idea to go with 17/64" tip?
just my $.02. |
RE: HIT inserts and Field Points/BHs
Another thing people don't do with these AXIS shafts is keep the shafts laying flat andhorizontally for 24 hours. If you set the arrows up on end the inserts will slide down the shaft and depending on which way you had them sitting the inserts will either be too close to the end of the shaft and the broadhead will not set against the shaftor too far away for the broadhead to grab some threads.
If your shop uses the black fast set glue for the axis shafts then you can be shooting in a couple of hours. Bit if they use the included epoxy then you had better leave them laying flat for 24 hours. |
RE: HIT inserts and Field Points/BHs
bigbulls is right again. I was a little miffed when I bought mine because I had to wait 24 hours to shoot them, but it is necessary for the epoxy to work right.

RE: HIT inserts and Field Points/BHs
I ordered 17/64" field tips from the easton site. They were $$, but I was having trouble finding 17/64" field tips. If I was going to order them I might as well get them from easton. I haven't shot those tips yet, but they are a perfect fit. My G5 Montecs fit as well.

ORIGINAL: KodiakArcher ORIGINAL: bigbulls At any rate, I got some field points and noticed that they WILL NOT fit into the shaft of the 400 FMJs. I used Goat Tuff Debonder on a Q-tip and VERY carefully swabbed the inside on the shaft. Make sure it doesn't dip down the insert. It worked, but is time consuming. |
