Best broadhead for ELK???
 

I just recieved my G5 100 grain heads and they are smalllll.They would
not shave the hair on my arm.Dose anybody shoot these and did you
have to sharpen them and did they get a good edge? Also just got my
first set of carbon arrows (carbon express terminators) they look
good anybody have any pros or cons on them.
Im going to be ELK hunting and want the best broadhead.I shoot Thunder
heads and they never failed on Kentucky whitetails but was looking
for cut on contact type head so lets hear it.

The G5 will work just fine if you can get them sharp.....My personal pick are the muzzy 4-blades. I shoot the muzzy 100 gr. 4-blade and have taken 3 bulls and 2 cows with it and it has never failed. Snuffers are an excellent choice also. They are similar to the G5 heads but much bigger. Oh and hte Terminators are great arrows.....

I use SteelForce broadheads. When I was setting
up my bow with them and had shot through a foam target
15 times with one head, it would still shave.

I agree with previous post. The G5 is a very strong
design. You should be able to get it sharp by honing
it on a diamond plate or arkansas stone. The 60 degree
edge allows you to simply push it on a flat hone. Get
it sharp and I'm sure it will do the job.

Monotecs are great heads, but you will have to sharpen them first. I think thier website has some tips on how to get them sharp. I really don't think there is a "best" head for everyone. You have to match the broadhead to your bow setup, and to the features you want. Some heads are better than others, and there is some real junk floating around as well. I do feel however the monotec's are one of the better heads on the market and should work very well with most setups. The thing to keep in mind with elk is penetration. They are a lot bigger than any deer you will see, and in order to get a pass through, or a least enough penetration you need well tuned equipment with razor sharp broadheads of modest cutting diamteter.

Most companies make a good head, the ones you have should do just fine once they are sharp. There are several heads out that have been proven on elk.

Steelforce, Phantoms, Rocky Mountain T-100's, Muzzy, NAP Thunderhead, GKF Deadhead, Rocket Steelhead, and Rocky Mountain Snyper. Oh yea don't forget about Magnus, Bear Razorheads, etc. They have done wonders on a lot of elk.

I got a pass through on a broadside bull with the 125 grain G5 shooting a Carbon Express 400 out of a 70# Darton Maverick. I resharpened it and used it to harvest a whitetail buck.

Because a person can lay the head flat on a stone it is fairly easy to sharpen in my opinion. I can get them sharp enough to shave hair but not in the same class as a Steel Force or Rocky Mountain.

I know of a couple of guys who got pass throughs with the Steel Force 125 (one inch cut). One of the guys was only shooting something like 56 pounds and it was a quartering shot.

I would have to agree with the others. "Best" is often an opinion or perspective, and may not be relative to the situation and/or setup another person is using.

If I were to head back to the mountains tomorrow bowhunting the wapiti I could with complete confidence and without hesitation use (in no particular order) Steel Force, Montec G5, Rocky Mountain Titaniums or Ironheads, or Muzzy.
