Summit climbing stand ?
 

I've owned a summit viper for 5yrs now. I'm in the process of redoing the stand. Re-painting it from worn spots, exposing the shiny metal. My cables are the concern. I'vereplaced sections of shrink tubing on the cables a few times now, and thinking I should either just re-shrink tube the full length of both cables, or replace them. Obviously new shrink tubing is the cheaper route. I weigh about 185lbs, and wonder if replacing them is really necessary. I have no rust or visual signs of wear on the metal cables or fasteners. I really don't see a cable breaking. Is their a norm or period of time they need to be replaced?

If the cables are not rusted or breaking then i wouldn't worry about new ones. My brother has had his Summit forover 10 yr or more and the shrink tube came off a long time ago. Nothing wrong with his cables.

I say re-shrink them and that would be good. If you see no wear, they should be fine.

Just my opinion, but I would sandblast the stand and have it powder coated. And sure, recoating the cables should be fine.

The shrink tubing is for silencing as well as a "weather proofing" but like the others said, use common sense and if it shows were then change it......but I wouild not use cost of new cables a factor......I mean it is oyur life we are talking about....and that should be priceless...[8D] If it were me i would just order new cables...jm2c;)

The cables are pretty stout on the Summit's.I don't believe Summit recommends any replacement as far as time is concerned. If they are not fraying , I'd shrink tube them.

i would just rewrap them the cable wont ever loose its strength unless broken or misused

Just for the noise reduction factor, I would rewrap them. I also have a summit, & infact am replacing the shrink tubing on both. They both are torn up. It also protects the steel cable from the elements.
