Back Tension Release?
A friend of mine (a serious archer) was telling me about back tension releases this morning. He uses them for hunting as well as target shooting. Apparently, the big advantage is the surprise break you get on the arrow release. Anyone have any experience with these for a hunting release? He says a vast majority of target shooters use them. they'll ruin you. its not that they want to use them for hunting - i don't think - its that once you learn its hard to shoot anything else - ask him if that's not true LOL. i know from first-hand experience. if you only hunt - i'd learn to operate the release you use w/ some back tension - and leave the triggerless releases alone.

He loaned one to me - went out and shot it today. Wasn't the best of conditions - 22 degrees, moderate snow all day, some wind - but it was amazing how you get a surprise break every time. I broke two nocks in ten shots. I'm with you, though - not for hunting - at least not for me.

I wouldn't shoot anything else. I don't know why any one would use a trigger release.When I got used to a back tension, I never looked back. But then that is my opinion.

The thing u want to consider is if u will be able to get to full draw the same now as when u are hunting. Your form may not be perfect in a treestand,or with bulky clothes , or at a bad angle.
Back tension releases are FORM releases. It takes PERFECT form to set them off. They are for teaching good shooting form , not hunting. I strongly suggest you use it off-season only. Just my opinion. |

I agree!!!!!!!!! I caint see useing back tension all bent out of shape on a odd shot with my stansklowski when I know I could get a good shot with my calliper release thats made for hunting......

Kind of like telling someone that you know many a guy who has electrocuted themselves after a warning is given, that changing their own outlets could result in them not working when needed. :D I don’t use one and haven’t been sold on doing so for hunting. Comfortable doing it the way I do and don't want to mess with it. A lot to be said for that. If you need to change because your not as good as you want to be, give it a chance. If your happy with the way things are, don't mess with it untill your sure you have it down. |
