How to determine DL ?
Ok so I want to get a new bow.. How do I determine my draw length? is it ok to shoot a bow with a slightly bent arm to reduce the DL? I dont want to buy a used bow and have it be too small.

RE: How to determine DL ?
Find a good pro-shop near you. If the folks there arelike thefolks at the shop near me you'll get all your questions answers and probably make some good friends as well.

RE: How to determine DL ?
The easiest way to get a close approximation is to measure your wingspan and then divide by 2.5. If you need further explaination then do a search of "wingspan". Then when you get a bow get one that is draw length adjustable till you figure out by shooting exactly what it will be.

RE: How to determine DL ?
The arm holding the bow should be slightly bent, not to reduce draw length but because it is the proper way.

RE: How to determine DL ?
Funny,my coach says a straight arm is "correct".;)
It is quite acceptable and may even be considered "correct" to have a slight bend on a hunting setup.Clearance can be an issue for the hunter. The wingspan method does not work for all. |

RE: How to determine DL ?
this is getting very redundant but I will post it one more time[:@]
How to Measure Your Draw Length Draw Length can be determined by a measurement known as 'wingspan.' This is simply a measurement and has nothing to do with how you actually draw back your bow. How to measure your wingspan: 1) Lean against a wall, standing as close to the wall as possible with back flat. [/b] 2[/b])Extend your arms and fingers out as far as possible 3) Have someone make a pencil mark at the end of both your fingers tips 4)Measure this distance This is your wingspan. Find this number in the chart below to find its matching Draw Length.(For example, a wingspan of 67" would be a draw length of 26") [/i] Wingspan Draw Length (inches) (inches) 6324 6424 1/2 65 25 66 25 1/2 67-----------------------------------------------26 68 26 1/2 69 27 70 27 1/2 71 28 72 28 1/2 73 29 74 29 1/2 75 30 76 30 1/2 77 31 78 31 1/2 *** The Most Common Draw Length is 29 inches. |
RE: How to determine DL ?
According to my level 4 coach,I am off about an inch from the wingspan method and if memory servesI know of acouple pros that also do not match up to the wingspan method.
I believe Erig Griggs and Michael Braden both said they didn't match up with it. |
RE: How to determine DL ?
The wingspan method will get you close , and close is not good enough , its a starting point . Go to a good pro shop and get it dialed in dead on , many still to this day shoot too long a draw length , a 1/4 inch will make a big diferance .
As far as straight arm ,vs bent arm , you will get many varing oppinions on that , even amoungst the pros , shoot what feels best to you , I am more consistant with a slightly bent arm , for taget and hunting |

I believe Erig Griggs and Michael Braden both said they didn't match up with it. That is true. It doesn't work for everybody. Not everybody drives a Chevy pickup truck either. There are variables in everything in life. But it's a lot closer than the 2-3" too long that most people are shooting because they know no better. And that is, again, why I always suggest bows adjustable for draw length until a person is sufficiently experienced to know for sure just what he should shoot. |

RE: How to determine DL ?
Papa.there is no kisser and draw length can vary according to the release that is used.
I can change my loop length to adjust for my release. This particular coach has coached 3 or 4 youth shooters to WORLD records. He KNOWS what he is doing. I do agree that there is a variety of opinions to which is better, straight or bent arm.I shoot a straight, but relaxed arm. I am a 27 1/2" draw according to the wingspan method but there is no way I can get proper form at that length.I must shoot 28 1/2" draw to maintain proper form.I could possibly go down to 28" on a hunting bow just to achieve some more clearance but I don't have a problem withthat. |
RE: How to determine DL ?
I bought a bow late summer andI had my bowshop measure me up with thier bow that has the ruler arrow on it. It said my draw length was 26" which I thought was kinda short. Well I think it was because I was a wuss at the time and had never drawn back a bow properly. Now that I have been doing a ton of practice and quite a bit of hunting I feel like its too short. The wingspan method says I should be at 27 1/2". Im gonna have my bow shop adjust it a bit and see how it feels.
Bigpapascout Thanks for posting that chart |
RE: How to determine DL ?
Wrong |
RE: How to determine DL ?
So bigpappascout you are suggestinr the arm holding the bow be locked straight out?
|
RE: How to determine DL ?
Bigpappascout, I have been asking around about bent arm or straight. It has bothered me ever since you posted the answer "WRONG" without any verification of why. It seems to be personal preference. One response I got was of a photo of two top shooters. Each with a different shooting style. You guessed itone bent and one straight. It seems that someone needs to inform the guy with the bent arm that he is WRONG and needs to be changing it if he wants to get anywhere in competitive archery.

RE: How to determine DL ?
Ash
You posted it was the right way to have the arm bent, that is what was wrong. Most coaches are teaching straight but not all,it does come down to personall preference. |
RE: How to determine DL ?
So having your arm bent isn't wrong, itwas the fact that I said it was the right way?
|
RE: How to determine DL ?
Really there is no right or wrong so saying one is right over the other is what is wrong.
I don't think that is what Big was saying but that is the fact. BUT,most coaches do prefer straight over bent. |

RE: How to determine DL ?
He also thinks the the wingspand methods work for just about everyone.
Don't loose sleep over it.;) Most coaches are going to side in the way of straight arm is "right" but as in everything else in life, there are always variables. |
RE: How to determine DL ?
I am speaking of target ahooting.
Hunting has several different scenarios to be considered.Bent has become accepted "right" for most. |

RE: How to determine DL ?
Well, anyone that knows me knows that I am not normal,ESPECIALLY MY WIFE!!!
I measured my daughter and she is close with the wingspand method but not exact. She draws a little longer with a Fits Me Too release but with a wrist release, she is fairly close.[8D] |
