Mathews Drenalin vs Hoyt Vectrix XL (REVIEW)
Well last night I finally had the opportunity to get to the shop I work part-time and get my hands on and shoot the new Mathews Drenalin.
The Mathews Drenalin: The Drenalin is a very interesting bow, upon initial inspection I found the finish to be just about flawless. It even seemed to be slightly thicker than most other companies finishes on their bows. The narrow limbs deffinitly thow you for a loop after looking at the wider limbs Mathews used for so many years, But it does not make the bow look ugly. Even with the redesigned limb pockets it still looks alot like the other Mathews bows out there. As far as the overall mass weight it is quite a bit lighter than the Switchback XT obviously due to the slimmed down limbs. Ok now on to the shooting. Upon initially holding the Drenalin I noticed that it seems to have a slightly slimmer grip than the Switchback XT. It actually felt very natural and comfortable in my hand. The draw cycle on the Drenalin is just as smooth as I expected with a nice solid back wall. The break-over was crisp but in my opinion not quite as crisp as the Vectix, it was just lightly more gradual. The cams also did not want to roll back over when you did not use the right amount of back tention to hold them at full draw. You know the feeling guys of those harsh draw cycle bows that wanted to rip the string from your hand. Well the Drenalin doesn't do this. I proceeded to shoot many arrows out of the Drenalin and imediately noticed some vibration and hand shock, and surprisingly there was some string buzz. I really did not expect this since the switchback and the switchback XT have no string buzz at all. But this is not something that can not be fixed by a set of string leeches or cat wiskers. I really attribute the hand shock and string buzz and vibration to the lower overall mass weight of the Drenalin. But all in all it was a nice shooting bow. Also I forgot to mention the Drenalin was set up with a sims s-coil stabilizer, so I'm sure there might even be a little more vibration or hand shock. Don't get me wrong this is still a very nice bow, and all of these minor problems can be fixed by using some limbsavers ond some other bow quieting and vibration reducing products. Head to Head: I then proceeded to shoot the Drenalin and a Hoyt Vectrix XL side-by-side. These two bows really have virtually the same draw cycle in my opinion. With the Drenalin just being ever so slightly smoother. But I was really splitting hairs to pick one that was smooter. I would say this is a tie in this area As far as speed It seemed to me that the Vectrix XL was slightly faster. Both bows were set up at 70lbs. I didn't shoot them through a chrono but to my eyes the Vectrix XL seemed faster. I will try to shoot the Drenalin with the same 350 grn arrow at 70lbs like I did the Vectrix in my previous review of the Vectrix. Winner Vectrix to be verified at alater date. The real difference came on the shot when there was virtually no handshock on the Vectrix XL while the Drenalin actually had some with a string buzz. To me the Vextrix wins out in this department. As far as the grips go, both grips feel very nice and comfortable, This was one of my complaints with both Hoyt and Mathews in previous years and they seemed to adress this. So lets call this a tie. Overall weight deffinitly goes to the Drenalin which really is no surprize considering the lighter and smaller limbs. Good for hunters who hike long distances with their bows. The overall finish also goes to the Drenalin, very smooth and thick with no pin holes and no scratches from assembly like the Vectrix XL I shot. And finally the price tag. Both the Drenalin and Vectrix XL are selling for $749 at my shop. But if we are comparing apples to apples the shorter Vectrix which I found to shoot just like its bigger brother is selling for $729. So as far as bang for your buck I would say the Vectrix wins out. Conclusion: But in conclusion I do have to say that both of these bows are very nice and will be at the top of each companies sales lists this year. It seems like to me that Mathews and Hoyt reversed rolls this year. Lat year I found the Trykon XL and the Trykon to have more vibration and not quite as nice as the Switchback XT. But this year I find the Vectrix to have less vibration and noise than the Drenalin. And these issues along with draw cycle are what I feel carry more weaight when comparing bows. So I have to give the nod to the Vectrix as being a slightly better bow IMHO. I some one had a switchback XT from last year and was looking to purchase a new Drenalin I would probably reccomend that they keep their Switchback XT and wait to see what Mathews has in store for 2008. This is just my honest opinion guys so take it for what it is worth.:) |
RE: Mathews Drenalin vs Hoyt Vectrix XL (REVIEW)
Again, thank you for the reviews. It is nice to have someone who is so non-biased in their assessment of new archery technology.
Ill chime in later, after I setup my Vectrix. It came in last night and I am going up today to get it all setup, that is providing I dont get blown away in this storm that is supposed to pass through New York later today. Again, thank you!:) |

RE: Mathews Drenalin vs Hoyt Vectrix XL (REVIEW)
Great review. Now, how would you rate these two new bows when compared to a Bowtech Allegience?
|
RE: Mathews Drenalin vs Hoyt Vectrix XL (REVIEW)
Terry, in all honesty I haven't shot a 2007 Allegiance but I have shot the '05 and '06 and I'd say the Allegiance from those years ranks right up there even with the Vectrix with the Allegiance being faster.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences. I look forward to trying both bows out in comparison to one another and to the Bowtech Guardian.

I ordered my Vectrix last Wednesday. Can't wait to get it!
I've not shot the Drenalin, but that Vectrix is one MIGHTY FINE bow! |
RE: Mathews Drenalin vs Hoyt Vectrix XL (REVIEW)
Great review.
My only thing to add to it is if you add all the vibration stuff that comes with the Vectrix and put it on the drenalin you would not have the hand shock and noise, your test then would be apples to apples. Just my .02. Personally I have ordered the drenalin after testing both and I just sold my bowtech Allegiance to support the purchase of the Mathews. |

:DPA Hardwoods you totally correct about the Mathews having all that vibration stuff. S coils weren't in my test and Limb savers type vibration and string leechestype materialswere on the Vectrix and not on my Mathews when I tested it.
No bones here if your'e happy that's cool like I said it's my .02 not your. Either of these bows are great products. |

RE: Mathews Drenalin vs Hoyt Vectrix XL (REVIEW)
Put on an sts on the Mathews and see which one would win your shootout....
I shot them both the other day and I thought the Mathews was a better shooting bow. Coming from a guy who has been sick of Mathews this Mathews that for years.... Here is a copy paste from an earlier post...... I also went and shot the bows last night.. I have owned a few Hoyts over the past few years (Xtec, Vipertec, Protec,Vtec, supertec) I can tell you I didn't care much for the vectrix. The no vibration claims are absurd.... It has the same "tuning fork" feel in the riser after the shot just like the Trykon does... (even with the imitation STS) The bow didn't have much "jump" at all but the vibration was out of control. Also the noise the draw stop peg makes hitting the cables is out of control, no matter how easily you pull the stop into the cables.... All the cams are is a toned down version of the spiral cams..... I will say however it is a beautiful bow. The Drenaline had a smoother draw then the Vectrix. Also much less riser vibration. However it did have more "jump" after the shot than the Vectrix. It's valley and wall wasn't the greatest however. I felt the wall was to spongy for my tastes... All in all I would say they both have some catching up to do.... The 07 Allegiance was a superior bow in my hands. This is just my opinion though........ |
RE: Mathews Drenalin vs Hoyt Vectrix XL (REVIEW)
Buckeye, I have seen what an STS can do for a bow and don't doubt for one minute that it could really quiet the Drenalin down. I am just reporting on how the bows come from the factory with minimal additions. This is just my honest opinion and take it for what it's worth. I think I did state somewhere that the Drenalin could be quieted down and vibration reduced. Not sure if it was on this thread or some other one somewhere. Now as for the 2007 Bowtech Allegiance and the Gardian and Commander I am really anxious to get my hands on these bows and put them through their paces

Grandviewer, I don't know if this was directed towards me or not but i'm gonna reply anyway. I assume you are a loyal Mathews Shooter from your posts. If I am wrong I am sorry. But if you are a loyal Mathews shooter, great for you, loyalty is a great trait to have. I never said the Drenalin was crap, just that in my opinion the Vectrix was just a litlle better. Trust me the Drenalin will be one of the top 5 bows this year. This review was my honest opinion. I have never owned a Hoyt or a Mathews, so their is nothing to be loyal to for me. I have however shot quite a few of them to test in the past. In fact I currently own a Bowtech Old Glory and am not in the market for a new bow. Just reviewing these new bows for fun. Nah it's not aimed at you or anyone here, I wouldn't begin to downslide into one of those silly nonsense debates. Your post does clear up your interest in this test and I think that adds better credentials to your test and personal opinion. |

RE: Mathews Drenalin vs Hoyt Vectrix XL (REVIEW)
I still highly recomend that people don't take my word for it and go out and shoot every bow they can get their hands on then make a decision on what you like the best. Good luck to you and I hope these conversations don't discourage you.;) |
RE: Mathews Drenalin vs Hoyt Vectrix XL (REVIEW)
Not discouraged at all. I know some guys will never agree with what I write or say. That's life. I just agree to disagree. Some of the other lines like ROSS are hard to find here too. But the next on my to test list are the new Bowtech's.

RE: Mathews Drenalin vs Hoyt Vectrix XL (REVIEW)
Great review!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think I might wait one more year to see if there are any bugs that develop in either of these bows. My reflex is only a year old and shooting great but I would still like to have a second bow.
|
RE: Mathews Drenalin vs Hoyt Vectrix XL (REVIEW)
That was a very nice reveiw. The only thing i dont know if i agree with is the handshock in the drenalin. But i have been shooting a Mathews Ultra Max which is kinda old so i dont exactly know how a extremlysmooth bow shoots. I also like how you dont pick a side in my opinion its not the bow that makes a good hunter its the person shooten the bow that makes you good or not. But i really liked your reveiw, thank you.

RE: Mathews Drenalin vs Hoyt Vectrix XL (REVIEW)
I have an XT (which will be for sale) and a Drenalin. I shot both side by side and do not notice a difference in hand shock at all. I also do not get any string buzz from my Drenalin.
Could it be that the rest, sight, or stabilizer was loose? I believe the Drenalin is a bit smoother than the XT and they "feel" very much alike EXCEPT the weight. You do notice the nearly half pound difference in overall weight. |
RE: Mathews Drenalin vs Hoyt Vectrix XL (REVIEW)
Sorry Primitive I beg to differ. The only thing on the Drenalin and I know for a fact it was tight. There was a noticeable difference between the XT and the Drenalin when it came to hand shock and string buzz. But IMHO that is due to the overall lighter weight of the Drenalin. Heavier weight bows soak up more noise and vibration. Just like arrows do. I didn't hate the Drenalin I just thought it was not worth giving up an XT for.

ORIGINAL: PA Hardwoods Sorry Primitive I beg to differ. |
RE: Mathews Drenalin vs Hoyt Vectrix XL (REVIEW)
I shot the Vectrix and XT as well, and I would go with the Vectrix if it were up to me. Good point about the heavier bows though and soaking up more vibration. Elite bows vibrate like a tuning fork (the one I shot) but they are also extremely light weight.
Most of the guys at the shop I go to still think the XT will outsell the Drenalin. |
RE: Mathews Drenalin vs Hoyt Vectrix XL (REVIEW)
Just bought a new 07 Vectrix XL. Upgraded from an 07 Bear Truth. I found this posting thread while doing some research online. I love the new bow. Definately has low hand shock and good speed. However, It makes a prounounced "twang" when fired, like a string buzz/slap. I took it to the pro-shop where I bought the bow, but they told me the sound was normal. Another shop told me the same thing. I just dont beleive it. The bow, which is supposed to be one of the quietest on the market is louder than my Bear.
I have string silencers on the stings and cables, but they didn't make much difference. I also adjusted the string supressor in and out, but cant make a difference there either. Looking for some advice from a few |
RE: Mathews Drenalin vs Hoyt Vectrix XL (REVIEW)
Realy well done reveiw ,I still liked the dren better

RE: Mathews Drenalin vs Hoyt Vectrix XL (REVIEW)
ORIGINAL: PA Hardwoods So what bows would you guys like to see reviewed? |
RE: Mathews Drenalin vs Hoyt Vectrix XL (REVIEW)
Grandviewer I would have to agree with PA the Matthews does come with vibration stuff and to be honest the lower cost fo the Hoyt is what got me on mine. I shot both and couldn't justify the extra money for the Matthews. I am not saying my Hoyt Vulcan is better but I am saying it was betterfor me for the price and quality.

whats the draw length range on the vectrix xl?
