Topped out on speed?
 

Howdy,
I'm a 63 year old archery enthusiastic fingers shooter. I really enjoy 3-D shooting and have some success, but am restricted by arrow speed a bit. I've decided Ineed to be satisfied with 60 pounds as a maximum draw weight from now on. Been looking for a faster bow that I can shoot as well as my Browing Maxim, but not found it. Got my FOC too far back already to get the arrow weight down, and still shooting a tiny bit weak on the arrow. Best I can get under 60 pounds is about 260 fps. I useually get edged out on score by guys shooting 300 fps or so, but they shoot more draw weight with bows having much more mass weight also. OK, so I'm getting wimpy. Anybody have experience with finger shooting a bow with higher speed that's eaqually easy to shoot? Thanks

Take a look at some of the longer Bowtechs...

I personally use an '04 Pro 40 dually (38" a-a)... and at 29"/60# w/ a 305gr arrow I get 314fps. I don't know how easy it would be to shoot w/ fingers though due to the very short valley. I have been hearing of an '07 Bowtech that will surpass the BK2...

I know what you are saying. I also shoot fingers with aluminum arrowsat aspeed of 256 fps. Those who are shooting 300 fps. are no doubt shooting a release with an overdraw. An overdraw is out of the question for fingers. The slightest torque on the bow or poor release will be amplified. You must decideif you want to continue shooting fingers or go all out and set up for a release. I have been shooting a Hoyt ProTec for target and hunting and the UltraTec for 3-Dto increase speed, but neither will keep up to an overdraw with carbon arrows. I spent nearly $1500 for a release set up a few years back. I went all out with 3X Apex scope, SureLoc sight and 30" carbon stabilizer. It ripped 33" 3-71 ACC's at 288 fps. which I think is outstanding and I shot very well, but just do not like shooting a release so I'm back to fingers. It's up to the shooter. There should be classes forfingers shooters, but if not, a release may be your only choice if speed is what you want.

I am not sure how long the Browningis ata or what the brace height is but take a hard look at the APA black mamba extreme. This is a seriously fast bow that is surprisingly easy to draw back and shoot.

I recently shot this bow (60#, 26")and theswitchback xt (70#, 26")through a chronograph with the exact same arrow.Both bows shot 261 fps. But the APA did it with 10 pounds less weight.

You've made no mention of what bow or draw length you are shooting, but 260 @ 60#'s is pretty respectable. There are many bows on the market that will produce speed, but it seems to me that yours will as well. Get yourself some new arrows to use for your 3D shoots, and get them as light as you can. Push the 5 gpp mark, which would give you a finished arrow weight of 300 gr. Don't go under that though. That will get you the maximum speed out of your bow.

My dad still shoots fingers as well. We had some issues finding longer ata bows that would allow him to do this, but you may check out something like a Hoyt Protec or Ultratec with spiral cams. These cams produce a pretty good amount of speed and are plenty long enough to shoot fingers.

Overdraws? Are you serious. The only people that use those are just because that's what they've been shooting since the 90s and don't know any better.

I shoot 314fps w/ a 29" carbon arrow... they just came out w/ them... ohh.. about 15yrs ago [8D]

But yes I do use a release aid. But the bow is 38" axle to axle and could in theory be shot w/ fingers... but the valley is very short and would be very hard on the fingers.
