question about peep sights
I put on a new cobra sidewinder radiant sight today, but when I look through it with my old peep sight I can't see the orange ring around the sight or the bubble level. Just seem a little small all of the sudden..
I was curious what size peep everyone else used. I mean, maybe it's not a bad thing I can't see it all but I would think with a bigger peep I would have a larger FOV.. Or does a smaller peep help keep your groups tight? Any info is appreciated |
RE: question about peep sights
Smaller peeps keep groups tighter, but they SUCK for low light conditions and sights. We tell most of our guys, if they don't want to buy another peep, to drill it out just slightly. Problem solved.
|
RE: question about peep sights
If possible, move your sight out a little,(if there is another set of mounting holes.)This will let you center the housing again. This will require that you reset your pins.If not you can drill the peep out BUT DO NOT USE A DRILL MOTOR.Just turn it by hand in a chuck.Peeps are aluminum or plastic and can be drilled very easily but drill motors cause lots of problems.[:o]I have seen it done.
I use a 3/16" peep on my hunting bow and center the housing but when I still had a target bow,I used an extremely small peep and centered the pin. |
RE: question about peep sights
1/4 g5 peep. The blue color along with the orange ring on the site is a beautiful thing in any light.
|
RE: question about peep sights
I second the new G5 peep sight, it has a huge hole. It does'nt matter how big the hole is as long as you have the same anchor point everytime with your kisser button things won't change.
|
RE: question about peep sights
Okay.. Well I've always used the peep with a rubber tube to aid in peep alignment.. I went ahead and bought the G5 peep and installed. (got the 3/16in. one though) Only problem is it doesn't seem to matter what I do I can't get it to stay in alignment. Everytime I draw it's sideways, I am using a "D" Loop.. Is there a fix for this? I mean if there's a chance this will happen while I'm hunting then it's gone..
Any suggestions? |
RE: question about peep sights
I shoot a Specialty Archery Products Super Peep. This consists of an aluminum peep with interchangeable inserts from 3/32" to 1/8" in diameter. For competition or bright conditions I likeone of the smaller inserts and for low light in ahunting situation,I switchto a larger diameter insert. There are also clarifiers and colored peepsif needed to help with focal problems.

RE: question about peep sights
That sounds like a neat peep, might have to look at it..
BUT, my question right now is about the peep rotating away from your view.. The G5 peep I installed has no rubber tube that pulls it straight like some and it keep rotating sideways to where I can't see through it.. Anyone else have this problem or better yet a fix? |
RE: question about peep sights
The bow needs to be pressed and the string twisted so that when you pull it back the peep comes into view properly. Simple thing really, but will take some trial and error until it's set just right.
|
RE: question about peep sights
the problem with your peep is caused by some serving on the string being wound in the wrong direction. while you can put twists in the string to get it to come back correctly, when you get in inclimate weather the issue gets compounded - and chances are it won't do the same thing it does when when you're shooting in normal weather. just to let you know because i know you don't want any issues when you're hunting. to get by, wal-mart sells some elastic chord in the sewing section. you can super glue it to your peep and use it like a peep tube. its real thin, and i've even seen it increase speed on a bow.

RE: question about peep sights
Did you ever shoot without a peep? I took mine off four years ago and won't put it back on. I shoot much better with both eyes open...being able to see everything.
|
RE: question about peep sights
When I first started archery years ago I did try it then tried the peep and liked it much better, I'll probably stick with the peep..
I guess I'll just go back to my ol' rubber hose peep and just get a larger hole to view through with one of those. This G5 is nice but if it won't stay straight then I won't use it... |
RE: question about peep sights
Before giving up , unless the peep at full draw is turned way off you can just adjust your d loop to bring it around at full draw . If the peep is like turned half way around then you will have to press the bow and twist the string to get it to turn around and then adjust the d loop for the small part of the rotation if needed.

Sounds just like when I set up my bow with your strings. What are you telling me?;) Those old Hoyt strings were fine in all weather conditions (I did have a problem once but that was my fault). No press of a bow. No twist in strings to fix peep alignment. What's next? :D |

Don't want you to be cussing me out, but I think you should at least give it a shot. You can always put a tubed peep back in and be good to go inno time. Weather will be changing soon and you can check things out before hunting. You have the peep, nothing to loose and some useful info to be gained. |
RE: question about peep sights
Oh, I think it's a good idea and I may still give it shot but I'm just a really impatient and very picky kind of guy. Partly because of my lack of time, I like to be ready to go as soon as possible.
The only problem I have with that idea is I'm just not the most confident person in the world when it comes to super glue holding certain things.. I mean like you said, with it getting really cold and the pressure on that string that's just glued to the peep, my thought is it could bust at any time.. I replace the rubber tube usually twice a year and I've never had a problem with one coming off or lining up right.. I'll mess with it bit but I'm not going to get extreme with it.. And if the string is off a bit I hate to replace it just cuz of a peep, it shoots good and thestring still looks good. Although it is the original string from Mathews on an Outback. I dunno, I'll mess with it some tomorrow and let ya know what I come up with.. Thanks for the advice.. |
RE: question about peep sights
I just put on the G5 peep sight and I love it. The blue peep just lines up perfectly with the yellow ring around my sights! Definitely worth the money to get this peep!

RE: question about peep sights
Don't use glue or anything extra on your string including inline loop knocks. All you have to do take your bow to a bow shop and have them put it in a press and twist the string until your peep lines up every time. Once you get it there it will stay unless you have a brand new string and it is still streching. Just went throught the same thing last year. It is soooooooo nice shooting without the frickin rubber tube floping all over the place

RE: question about peep sights
You've pretty much gotten the answers to your problem.
It will take some time tinkering with the string the get the peep to line up--even moving a few strands from one side (of the peep)to the other will do the trick sometimes. But the swing in weather, does affect the tubeless peep sometimes. I would say, since you seem like aguy with limited amount of timeand confidence is at the forefront--then you're better off using a peep with a tube. This way you'll never have to worry about the peep not aligning. One less thing to worry about. Predator Products Co, makes the Perfect Circle peep, 1/4 dia, that has a perfect circular holeon bows 32"-44"ATA, and comes with the tube. I've used this peep in the past and it worksreally well. |
RE: question about peep sights
I just installed the 1/4" version of the G5 peep and like it a lot so far.
|
RE: question about peep sights
The META G5 1/4" Hunter peep is indeed a neat peep. I've also removed my Fletcher's and replaced it with the G5 and I'm certainly not disappointed.
I also use the Specialty Archery Super Ball Peep and having various colors the choose from makes things moreinteresting. |
RE: question about peep sights
I had a pro shop twist the string a bit tonight and we just about got it straight.. Still a bit off once in a while but I will mess with it a little and see what happens.. If it's justoff one way or the other a tad then it don't matter cuz you can still see through it.. I do like the sight though, very nice..

Good deal!

RE: question about peep sights
Demo - I used to shoot a peep that did not have a peep aligner attached to it. I had a separate aligner which was served into my string just above the peep. Worked great and gave me the option of installing whatever peep I liked regardless of an attached peep aligner.
I don't recall who made the aligner, but I think if you checked around you could still find them. I got a new setup this year and had a peep with aligner attached installed, and had the same problem with you you mentioned, I have been looking into a new peep and if I decide on one like the G5 (lots of nice reviews in this post) I'll just have the aligner served in above it. Personally I have found if it can go wrong IT WILL GO WRONG! And always at the worst possible time. If your peep is not coming back square 100% of the time - you can just about count on the fact it won't when it really matters. It's worth the time and effort to find a way to make it 100% now. If I can find the source for that peep aligner I'll PM you, it really saves a lot of frustration. |
