ATTN STS users!
So heres the deal. My STS eliminated hand shock and gave me a few FPS, but i dont like the slapping sound i get when i shoot.
I emailed them and they havnt gotten back to me, but im thinking of modifying the stopper on the STS. My thought was to slice the stopper lengthwise about 1/8" deep. Then adjusting the STS so that the newly made slice wraps around the string. Essentially "grabbing" it. Im thinking that this would severely lessing the slapping sound. But im concerned my string would eat apart the stopper after awhile. Any thoughts on this. PS. I've adjusted the distance from the string to make it as quiet as possible, Ive also tried moving some of those simple rubber stoppers that i had on my string so that they hit the STS first. No matter what i do i still get a slapping sound. I need to shoot the bow w/o the STS to get a good feel for the old sound. I plan on doing that before I do anything dramatic. |
RE: ATTN STS users!
I would think the string would slice the stopper right in two. There is a slow-motion video running around of one in action and it appears to take one heck of a whoopin' from the string.
Have you served the string yet where it hit's the stopper? I ended up adding a string leech on the top of my Tribute's stringand feel that it made the bow even quieter than before. For grins you can just rotate the STS out of the way for a few shots to help compare. |
RE: ATTN STS users!
I think they slap too, but we are certainly in the minority. Over on Archerytalk, there are some guys who would just as soon neuter you for saying anything that's not totally positive about the STS. For the record, I had mine as much as 1/2" away from the string, and could never find the "sweet spot." The bow I used it on was a Darton, which are known for vibration and noise. Go figure.

RE: ATTN STS users!
I actually had an idea for a version that was 2 facing plates with soft bristles on the inside that overlap and the string would slide into them. No slapping sound and the bristles would grab the string.[:-]
Huh? huh? not bad huh?:D |
RE: ATTN STS users!
And then think of the money you could make selling replacement bristles... ;)
|
RE: ATTN STS users!
Matt - yea i was thinking thats kinda what mine would be like. Im just worried that cutting it would rip the stopper in two when i shot.
Dave C- I served the string and that didnt help much. Did you put your string leech so it hits the STS instead of the serving? |
RE: ATTN STS users!
No, it just the string & serving. The leech is up top as close to the upper serving as possible- that is whereI could still hear some string twang when shot from inside my ground blind.
Once again, I like the STS on my Patriot, but don't feel my Tribute gains much from it. |
RE: ATTN STS users!
tonight im gonna shoot my bow again w/o the STS, I'll get my gf to listen. I'll try some things and see what happens... keep yall posted.
|
RE: ATTN STS users!
A video camera would also help you discern the different noises, you could do a with & without & play it back with the volume cranked to get a feel for the different noises that are heard from a distance.
Add a tripod into the mix & you can video yourself shooting towards the camera to hear what the deer hears at ~15-20 yards. |
RE: ATTN STS users!
can and will do!

RE: ATTN STS users!
Shot my bow w/ the camera, as well as took off the STS and shot.
HUGE Difference. The bow is noticibly quieter w/ the STS. It feels so uncomfortable to shoot w/o the STS, the hand shock that is completely gone w/ the sts is violent w/o the sts (at least it seems that way). After two shots i put the STS back on and continued to tack drive. I also put the camera behind my target and shot at 25 yrds. You can hardly hear the bow, and the arrow hits just bout the same time you realize you heard the bow. It also was pretty sweet to watch my arrows fly so fast and straight. A point of view ive never seen. Also got a good look at my form and am pleased w/ it. I dont think im going to cut my STS now... just leave it the way it is for now. |
RE: ATTN STS users!
Hey Matt, you may have the answer there. Hope you figure out how to "Git R Done!"
I do believe that most of the slap heard when using the STS reflects back toward the shooter, just as I believe that the slap you sometimes hear (at least I do) from the Whisker Biscuit is mostly a back of the bow type of noise. I don't think it travels in the direction of the arrow nearly as much as it does in the opposite direction. I do think that with a combo of a Sims Enhancer 2000 and an S-coil, my bows have nearly the same (close to zero) level of vibration as my Darton had with the STS on it, so I just don't see the need right now. That, and the Champions don't have a rear stabilizer bushing. Don't care so much for the front mount. Ed, what kind of Hoyt do you have that has so much noise and vibration, as you mentioned in giblet's Switchback thread? |
RE: ATTN STS users!
VTEC, I dont get any vibration w/ the STS on. Its like shooting a pellet gun.
I agree, I think the noise is reflected back, because when i put the camera down range it was hardly audible. |
RE: ATTN STS users!
Here's something to consider. They've found that children can hear sounds that us adults can't hear. I took a test the other week with my wife and kids and the kids beat us both badly.
Children can hear higher pitched frequencies and have been known to set their cell phones so that their teachers can't hear when their phones ring. Therefore, since deer can hear higher pitches frequencies, I would imagine that childrens' hearing could similate, to some extent, a deer's hearing at a specific spectrum. Now to the matter at hand. I had a STS on my personal bow and had found the 'sweet spot' after repeated efforts. The 'sweet spot' was that spot that did NOT ruin my tune and which gave me the best shock and noise control. I thought it was great from my perspective. Then in walks my 13 year old son. As I was shooting he walks up next to me and asks me why my bow is now loud. I couldn't hear a thing, but he was very sincere (out of the mouths of babes ;)). Anyway, I immediately loosened the STS and moved it out of the way. He said "That's a lot better dad.", and I never put it back on again. Also, my groups didn't improve and I never hit my arm anyway. It's possible toattribute some of these comments to those who may not be properly set up,or those who might have form problems, or both. |

and I never hit my arm anyway. |
RE: ATTN STS users!
HuntingED, glad you're happy with your findings- confidence is what matters come crunch time.
|
RE: ATTN STS users!
i don't have one on the sb - its got its own suppressors - but the one and only reason i outfitted my pat with one is i don't like being cold. i'd rather be in the stand with a big jacket on and reasonably warm - than freezing. i can't make it 2 hours if im freezing to death. i could shoot my pat with the sts in my heavy winter non-hunting coat with no fear of the string hitting my jacket. to me - that reason right there is enough to use one for hunting.

RE: ATTN STS users!
I think for me, It didnt make it much quiter or louder, but it reduces hand shock and shortens the time of the noise. So Its just one short pop rather than a pop and humm...
Im gonna keep fooling w/ it and try to find the sweet spot. When you watch the down range shot on the tv w/ vol up high, you barely hear a thud and the arrow hits... Its moving so fast I dont think they'd have time to react that much... By the time you hear the thud, the arrow is already halfway there.. |
RE: ATTN STS users!
AEP already has the problem solved. They make one that is softer rubber and it is two smaller heads and has four small brisyles on the end but It is not exactly what Matt is talking about but I have had both the STS and the new one from AEP and the AEP is definetly MUCH MUCH quieter........[8D]

RE: ATTN STS users!
Thanks for the info, Frank. Sounds really good. Any web site or source for the AEP?
|
RE: ATTN STS users!
Crap I knew you would ask me that I do not have the info handy. Maybe try googlr seacrh for AEP or archery engineering products?? I will resaerch it and check it out. sorry. let you know ASAP.

Nunzio at AEP:
....FANTASTIC guy, nice products.....website never so good.;) |
RE: ATTN STS users!
anyone know where i can see a picture of one, or buy one?

RE: ATTN STS users!
gibblet:
Around here we get to hunt in weather that is very cold and humid. It's not uncommon for me to be huntingin the low 'teens and sometimes in single digits. Plenty of clothing is required and I still never hit my arm. Just thought you'd like to know.;) Ps And my bow has a 6 1/2" brace height.:D |
RE: ATTN STS users!
len, do you hunt with the same drawlength bow you would target shoot with?
also, i may have not been quite clear what i look like in the stand when its real cold - think 'the michelin man'. |
RE: ATTN STS users!
'the michelin man'. I can really relate to that. I use the same bow for everything. 3D, spots, and hunting. Heck, I even shot a FITA round with my friend in Florida summer heat one time with the same bow. 75 pound hunting bow did get a little burdensome at around the 100th arrow.:D Why do I do this? It keeps me in shape all year round for both tuning customers' bows and for the hunting season (which is my first passion). Also, shooting with either hand has improved my overall shooting and opened up a lot more opportunities in the tree. Deer really can't sneak up on my 'blind side' any more.:D |
RE: ATTN STS users!
thanks Huntinged. that is it. I was at work and did not have time to check it out. I have been using his stuff for about five years along with the Stealth stab's from Jerry.
|
RE: ATTN STS users!
Just curious if anyone has tried a piece of moleskin on the STS rubber stop? Who cares if the string rips through it, you only need it for one shot right?
|
RE: ATTN STS users!
I tried the carpet type of things for the bottom of chair legs, and also loop half of velcro. Both seemed to make the slap quieter, neither would stay on reliably.
