Vertical vs Horizontal sight pins
 

I'm looking for a new sight for whitetail deer hunting.I need some advice from someone more experienced than I am.
I'm looking for a 3 pin sight with a metal ring to protect the pins.The sight that came with my LH BuckMaster 2000bow had a plastic cover that's now cracked and one of my pins broke off.
I've never tried using the vertical pins.Are they as easy to adjust as the horizontal pins?Can you see your target alot better?I use a peep sight.
I don't have alot of money to spend but I don't want the cheapestsight either.Thanks for any help you can give me.

I'm not sure if I have any more experiance than you, but I'll give a little of what littleI have to offer;).

I like a single vertical pin for hunting, multiple vertical pins cover too much of what your trying to aim at once you get past the top pin.
For hunting with a verticle an adjustableslider or single pin is the only way I'd go. I like being able to line the single pin up the leg and aim at the nuckle, it works well for me that way.

For a multiple pin sightI like a horizontal pin with a .029" for the 20yard pin and .019" pins after that. Tru-glo used to sell one that way andI made my most recent sight aqusaition that way by starting with a .019 sight and adding a .029" for the twenty pin.
The .029" willshine more in a low light scenerio and the .019" block less of the target at furtherdistances.

I'd recommend you look at the tru-glo'sand cobras.

Dave hit it on the head: I've got a Trophy Ridge Matrix on one of my bows, and I don't like the sight picture once I have to use something other than my 20-yard pin.

I've also got the Extreme RT 900 pictured there, and I love that sight, probably as much as my Spot Hogg. It just doesn't offer as much manueverability. Once set however, the sight picture is just as nice, and the pins are brighter.

Try gapping your 30 and 40 yard pins for a shot at 35 yards with a verticle pin sight and you'll see why I use a horizontal pin setup for hunting ;)

I use a single vertical pin with a slider on my bow. I set it for 25 yards and I'm good out to 35 yards +/- 1". I do have marks for 40+ yards but I only use them at the range. If your bow isn't that fast, I would agree with using a 3 horizontal pin sight. Keep the pins to a minimum on your hunting bow.

I gap shoot with my vertical sight all the time, no problem!!! The one dissapointment I have with my Matrix is that it is certainly NOT the brightest pinned sight on the market!!

Obviously, one can do it. I can obviously, but I think Josh is right; it's certainly a LOT easier with a traditional horizontal-pin sight.

If you are hunting from a stand. A good pendulum sight 0-40 yds, put the pin on it and pull the trigger. It is as simple as that!

I hunt with a SightMaster sight with the slider that G2 Shooter mentioned.
SightMaster, HHA, Vitalbowgear, among others, make slider type sights.
With this type sight, you only have a single pin and don't have the worry you might choose the wrong pin by mistake like with a multi-pin sightwhen a big Buck comes into range and you're excited.
I also like the Eradicator sight because it is the same principle as shooting a handgun and I love handguns.
Don't need a peep with the Eradicator and can get it with Tritium dots that are visible in total darkness.
It's not a handsome sight but is probably the most rugged hunting sight ever made.
I almost bought a Moon bow and the Eradicator was my 1st choice for a sight for it.

I personally like vertical pins, and shoot better with them. I find the vertical pins very nice for shooting 3-D targets and deer because you can line the pin up right behind the leg, and it kind-of gives you a quick right-to-left alignment fast.
