Blazer vanes falling off
I just had blazer 2" vanes put on a few of my carbon arrows by the localbow shop. After a couple of times out target shooting, I had one arrow have avane fall completely off as it passed through my whisker biscuit, another arrow had the tail end of the vane come loose.
The vanes on the other 6 arrows appear to be ok.I have never had a problem with thequality of work from the bow shop, is this something characteristicof the blazer vane, or just bad workmanship? I am going to have the shop fix the mistakes, check the other arrows for problems, but would like to know if anyone else has had problems with blazer vanes. -RickC. |
RE: Blazer vanes falling off
Nothing against your shop, tech's have bad days too. I would have to say bad workmanship. I've just NEVER had a problem w/ Blazers falling off, even through a WB. What glue does he/she use, do you know?
|
RE: Blazer vanes falling off
Not sure what type glue is being used. Do the blazers require anything out of the ordinary to make them stay put?
|
RE: Blazer vanes falling off
Nope. In fact, that's one of their selling points. No preperation needed. He prolly just didn't get quite enough glue on, or perhaps there was some oily residue left on the arrow. In either case, it's nothing to worry about, I don't think.

RE: Blazer vanes falling off
Again, good call mobo. Could be that he got a little oil on them from his hands, perhaps a little sweaty in this heat! Mine have stuck real good, especially to the wraps.

RE: Blazer vanes falling off
I had the same problem at first with my Blazers not wanting to stick. Applied 3" wraps for my second round at applying Blazers. Haven't lost a vane in three months.

RE: Blazer vanes falling off
Agreed, don't blame the Blazer's in fact, I've shot through my Morrell bag with my ACC's and Blazers and torcher them to get them out and they still stick....yup, KE...oh you asked, Allegiance!

RE: Blazer vanes falling off
Rob, if you would have been shooting the Trykon, it would have went through the target, through the bush, past the tree, over the street, through the garbage can and under the porch. Nothing but net!!!

RE: Blazer vanes falling off
I hear ya Rob. My arrows have started going through my bag up to the nocks even with the (piece of junk) BLOCK behind that.
Those blazers are still blazin'.:) Rick: Buy yourself a Bitz and solve that problem.;) |
RE: Blazer vanes falling off
same problem .I figure I could do that good
bought a blitzberger.no problem since |
RE: Blazer vanes falling off
My new Blazers do great, even with the occasional foul up while putting them on. The others are right, he probably just didn't degrease the shafts or didn't put enough glue all the way down them.

RE: Blazer vanes falling off
Any fletch/vane glued correctly will not dislodge! I would suggest the guy at the shop is at fault - all the more reason you should learn how to do it correctly yourself.
|
RE: Blazer vanes falling off
Agreed, the guy fletching them must have had a bad day or something. I use blazers exclusively except for my IBO HC arrows and no problems here. I have also fletched hundreds of them for others through the shop and no problems there either. I use bohning platinum fletchtite, goat tuff, or pine ridge. All those glues work well.

RE: Blazer vanes falling off
I had the same problem with some of my arrows but I called Blazer and they cleared up the problem. They recommend just cleaning the shaft well with a SOS pad and letting them air dry. Be carefull of soaps and even fabric softeners in the towels you use to dry the arrows. They have lanolin in them. I use Platinum Fletch-tite. Good luck.

wrap em if they dont stick again

RE: Blazer vanes falling off
If your block or any open layer target is worn out try this: take two rachet straps and tighten securely around the target,it should work like new by squeezing the layers of foam together.

RE: Blazer vanes falling off
Thanks Dr. Andy!
Blazer work and I have not had one fall off ever after doing dozens. I have shot one off with another broadhead slamming into it LOL but wrap or no wrap they stay put. Just a bad day for the guy who did it. |
RE: Blazer vanes falling off
I went back to the shop, they appologized and refletched and checked each arrow (8 total).
Today, the second day of target practice after the shop fixed and checked the fletchings, and again I lost a vane and found 2 others that were loose. I plan to have the shop do the job right since I already paid for it, but I think in the future I will start fletchin my own arrows. What type of equipment do I need, is it something fairly simple to do? What is the purpose ofwrapping the arrow before putting on the fletching? -Rick C. |
RE: Blazer vanes falling off
To fletch your own is very, very simple. All you need is the fletching jig of your choice, vanes of your choice, and glue of your choice. It will take a few arrows before you really get the feel of it, but it truely is quite simple.
Wrapping arrows has benefits. First, and most importantly, it makes your arrows look REALLY cool. :D We all know in archery it's not how good you are, it's how good you look doing it! ;) Glue adheres better to wraps. The finish on most carbon arrows doesn't promote good adhesion, which is why it is critical to clean the shaft properly first. There are only 2 negatives to wraps, as I see it. First, if you need to replace just one vane, it's a little tricky. I just strip the old one off and put the new one on in the same place. It doesn't look as good, but it performs equally. Second, it adds weight to the back of your arrow. If your FOC isn't negatively affected by that, it doesn't matter. |
RE: Blazer vanes falling off
The bow shop finally found the problem.Since the blazer is a shorter vane thannormal, the fletch clamp was rocking slightly forwardcausing a bad bond on the tail end of some of thevanes.
Now when they fletch using blazers, they put a second blazer in the front of the clampto keep the clamp from rocking forward. Thisassures the entire length ofthe vane is bonded to the shaft. Hopefully this is useful information to someone out there. - Rick C. |
RE: Blazer vanes falling off
Just tried some of duravanes glue. We have a winner. Takes about 15 sec. per vane. Blown through the target and they are still on. Kind of makes me wonder what taking them off might belike.
