can you put string leeches on without a bow press?

As already mentioned you can do them w/out a press. But you need to be extra careful that you don't damage the string when you're doing it. For a few extra dollars it might be worth just paying a shop to install them for you. Or go with a tie-on silencer such as cat whiskers.

I agree with JeramyK. I've used the below seperator in the past in a pinch, but a press works much better. It will damage your string the more you use it, even though it says it will not.
Another good option such as Cat Whiskers are BowJax in the original model. They slip over your string without a press and are held on by very tiny cable ties. It sounds clunky but it isn't. I used them for years before I put on a STS and liked them way more than the leeches, and I still use them on my back-up bow.

I WOULD USE A BOW PRESS, ANYTIME YOU TRY AND SEPERATE THE STRING WITHOUT IT RELAXED YOU WILL MORE THEN LIKELY BREAK SOME OF THE STRINGS. THIS WILL NOT BE SAFE AND WORST OF ALL THE STRING MIGHT GIVE WHEN THE TROPHY YOU HUNT COMES IN.
GOOD HUNTING.
GOOD HUNTING.

I bought one of those at Gander Mt last week for $5.95 . A bit pricy for what it consists of but it works like a charm and doesn't do any damage to the string . No need for a bow press to install string leeches ........
