Depends on what you want to do with them afterwards. My Dad had a coon one time at our camp on the Ouachita river that kept getting in the garbage and tearing it up. He no longer has coon problems anymore. This will also work with cats too so you have to be careful. This is what he did:

He got a battery charger, a 3" nail, 3 to 4 foot piece insulated wire, a BBQ grill grate, 2' 2x4 (optional), big fish hook like you would use worm fishing for bass and a piece of meat (chicken, steak, whatever).

Lay the grill grate on the ground and drive the nail into a wall or into the 2x4 (nail the 2x4 into a post or wall) to where the coon has to stand on the grate to get to it. Take the hook and solder it to the wire or fix the hook to the wire so that it will not come off. Wrap the wire around the nail so that the hook hangs directly over the grate and that it will stay on during contact with the coon. Put the meat on the hook. Connect the negative side of the battery charger to the grate and the positive side to the wire that is hanging with the hook.

What will happen is this. The coon will come up during the middle of the night and smell the food. He will stand on the grate and grab the meat with his mouth, this will hook him like a big ole fish, the positive (hook) will meet the negative (grate) and the conductor will be the coon and that will not be good for him.

You have to be careful also because this could cause a fire. Positive current and negative ground do not do well together with dc current. Have you ever hit the negative post on your battery when trying to tighten the positive post down, big ole spark. When Dad did it he heard it happen and when the coon stopped banging he unplugged the battery charger. Good luck.

Just playing devil's advocate but Tigerfan, do you really think your post is good to display to the world including anti's? Don't get me wrong but I'll wack any coon that is within killing range. I hate those buggers. Connibears and sardines is the best and most efficient. Broadheads are wonderfull as well.

Not to mention that his suggestion violates any number of game and animal cruelty laws .

Tigerfan, I read that and just spit Hawaiian Punch all over my keyboard. That could quite possibly be the funniest thing I've ever read since I started posting here.

Kinda sounds like something from the Itchy and Scratchy Show on the Simpsons.

"the conductor will be the coon and that will not be good for him"... LMAO

Hook 'em up to 220v and you can cook em at the same time, it takes 20 sec for a hotdog on 110v, so I'g guess about 2 min outta do it for a coon on 220V LMAO This one is beyond even Homer!!!

tigerfan, I don't find this much different then hooking thousands of chickens to rotating cables which then dip them into electrified water. This is found perfectly acceptable
Hell not much more then a insect zapper for pests:D:D

For the sake of conversation I'll respond to this because I too see your point but, (theres always a but when you talk to someone from North LA haha) can anyone tell me how shooting an animal with a high powered rifle and a round that is made to expand to cause as much internal damage as possible is more humane than electricution? The point is that either way will cause instant death, one way you get eaten up by bugs and the other way you can watch bart and homer until the lights flicker and then unplug a cord. Sure you could use a trap, but not everyone has a trap. You could shoot them but, some people live in the suburbs and would go to jail for discharging a firearm inside the city limits. Most everyone has electricity now a days and for about $3 you can have your very own trial tested, proven coon killer.

What about shooting a coon with a stick and string that will not instantly kill him. What about stating that "Don't get me wrong but I'll wack any coon that is within killing range." Does this sound like a good display to the world including the anti's?

I have stated on this website that I do not hunt for the sake of taking a life. I do it mostly for the camradire that I was missing since getting out of the Marines. I haven't harvested a buck in 4 years (and I see several every year but, will only shoot mature bucks over 3 1/2) and only shoot as many deer as my family can eat in a year. Which is normally 3 or 4. I love to duck hunt and will go as much as time allows and I never shoot over the limit, never have, never will. If I see a coon while hunting, I will only shoot him if I know someone will clean him and eat him. If not he gets a free meal with my corn and I get a little entertainment. I am in no way stating that you don't feel the same way, or that I am right or wrong.

To everyone that got a little entertainment at my expense, I'll be here all week. haha I have worked on hog, chicken, and cattle farms and I can tell you from experience that if you have never done it, you would be amazed at what goes on. Right or wrong, it still happens.

Good Luck and Happy Hunting.

Tigerfan, point taken and there was no harm intended. As I stated I was merely playing devil's advocate. I appologize if I offened you. I could care less what was done (as long as there is no intended torture) or what was posted. Again I was only playing devil's advocate (I was not taking any actual position for or against anything in particular).

I completely understand and I am sorry if I sounded like I was offended. I can assure you that I was not in the least. Like I stated at the beginning of my post before, I was responding for conversation sake. I like to hear what people think and I love to play devils advocate alot as well. Thanks for your imput about what I posted.

Good Luck and Great Hunting

Hey Tigerfan, I love your "Acme Super Coon Extermination and Cook System". Have you patented it yet? Are you by any chance related to that world renowned inventor, Wile E. Coyote?

RE: How do i kill a raccoon

.22 short to the head if you know where they are. If not use a trap. Keep in mind these things are MEAN and tough. If you trap one live it will not be happy about it. You may have to shoot it while it is in the trap.

Honestly a spot light and a .22 short works great. My step dad used to hunt coon and he did pretty well that way with a head mounted spot light. He did use dogs though. If you live in a real populated area I would suggest a trap for safety and legal sake.

I would also check local game laws as well to see if there is a season and if you can legally shoot them out of season or if you need a small game permit to do it. Whether you want to follow them is your decision, but you should at least know.

May I ask why you want to kill them? You said you have been feeding them? Are they causing damage or attacking small pets? Or now that you have befriended them you have decided to start whacking them? If they are not doing any damage you might want to try and do it legally. If they are causing damage I say go for it regardless. However you shouldn't have been feeding them;). They are pretty much like little bears in that regard.

Paul

No it's not patented, Dad always said that it should be for all of the people to use.

i just got mine this mornin....what i found to work the best in sunflower seeds....dont know why but if you lay some sun flower seeds in front of the door then a small leaf inside on the pedal of the trap door they will be there every time..marshmellows also do well too...this is for backyard trappin in the woods is a whole new ball game...but you can do 1 of 2 things with a trapped coon....#1 shoot it in the ear with a 22. and trade in the pelt for a few $$$...or. if you dont want to kill it, VERY carefully grab the handle and tie a rope to it so u can get a good foot away from that cage cause they can reach. put it in the back of your truck and drive it far away. then tie a long length of cord onto the handle and give it a good yank and the trap will flip and let the door open....i choose #1 and im now about $10 richer....

BTW just look how cute the are till u get close and they try 2 rip your face off :D

Cute? Think how much cuter he'd be with his brother next to him perched on top of the heads of those "children of the corn" (have you seen that post) while they 're out learning to shoot bows themselves! Daniel Boone ain't got nothin on us modern-day hunters!

Terrible idea. No way should anyone do that! Way too much trouble, way too cruel, why not just shoot the damn thing?!? No room on this forum for posts like that.

Tigerfan. Do you want to be my new friend. I like you.

I have been haveing problems with crows in my trash. I am wondering if something like this would work. I would have to put the trash out on non trash days so I don't zap the trash man. I don't have to kill them, just zap them. I would reeducate the birds. I could use an electric fence as the source. Ideas.

I got plenty of those buggers, I can't keep them out of my damn deer feeders........

To be honest if I could find a local near my property that had coon hounds and if it wouldn't interfere with my deer hunting I would gladly let them run the dogs for a few nights.

The most humane way is to just educate them and not have to kill them! PETA loves me...not! Invite the Rev over and with his bow he will shoot and miss and the coon will run off laughing or possibly die from laughing. He is a armed conservationist....ask any deer in 2 different states!

dkbs 04-03-2010 07:17 AM

Hello

Use a havahart trap, bait it with sardines. Then you can release it at a remote area or dispose of it. A farmer I knew trapped them in his barn and had a 55 gallon drum filled with water. He'd toss the trap and raccoon in the drum for 10 minutes, dispose of the dead raccoon, reset the trap.

We had a large duck pond growing up. Lots of resident ducks and geese. My uncle used one of those Havahart traps to catch coons and possums. After capture, he would throw the trap into the pond for about 20 minutes. Worked great!

OhioBowhunter 04-04-2010 12:17 PM

pour some dog food in your back yard and leave it there. stand on your padio porch whatever (even inside your house and shoot through a window etc) and wack em with your bow. Note other "baits" will work but dogfood smells so they pick it up faster

genesis27:3 04-04-2010 04:38 PM

I trap em mostly, but I have also shot em and sicked my dogs on em.
