Axle length and releases?

"I haven''t bow hunted for the last 11 years and I''m planning to start again this fall. I have an XI Intrepid bow 44" axle to axle that I really like and was thinking of going to a release. I have had a couple people plus a so called archery expert at a local Gander Mountain store tell me that I can''t use a release because the bow wasn''t made to use one. Is this correct? I''ve never heard such a thing. I''ve talked to several bowhunters who have older bows who switched from fingers and use releases. I would like your opinion on this matter.

You can use a release with the bow, it seems as though the "pros" at the local Gander Mt. just wanted to make a sale on a new bow.

I agree with BM, a release can be used with any bow.

I used to shoot 3D with a guy who had that exact bow. He shot it with a release aid. He punched the heck out to the trigger and flinched badly, but he shot the bow with a release.[8D]

As stated, there is no reason that bow can't be shot with a release.

Perhaps it was more about the particular rest on the bow and not the bow itself......any bow can be used with a release but not necessarily every rest.

rob said it right. You can shoot a release on any bow if its set up for one. May had a rest set up for fingers? You can shoot a release on any bow. But not very well if not set up correctly. Probably wont hurt any thing. but might be a little difficult. good luck !!!!

You can shoot a recurve with a release if you want to. I don't know how well it would it work, but I have done it. Axle to Axle length really doesn't determine if you use a release until you get to short bow. The shorter axle to axle bows are hard to shoot with fingers and some are so short a string loop is even better. However a longer ATA bow can be shot either way.

Like said above you would want the proper rest for it, like a prong rest or something that takes up shock from the bottom. Some older bows don't enough shelf room for this kind of rest, maybe that is your case? Finger shooters need a rest that absorbs shock from the side because the arrow flexes from side to side.
