WOW shot @ 40 yards

I got back into bow hunting last year after about a 20 year absence.
I shoot a Hoyt V-Tech @ 62 lbs with a single pin HHA sight. I decited to re-sight my bow and make a mark for 40 yards. No problem, 20 and 30 yards IM deadly. How ever, IM OK at 40 yards. What a difference 10 yards makes. It's not the bow I assure you. 2 out of 5 arrows are in the sweet spot. The others would be gut shots. I'll keep working on it.

Sounds good. It's suprising how quick accuracy can come with all the new equipment out there. Congrats.

I will give you a piece of advice my buddy and I have tried. If you want to extend your lethal hunting range out to 40 yds., shoot at 60-80 yds. We have been shooting like this for awhile in preparation for Elk hunting out west this coming fall. We shoot at a Mackenzie 3d deer. Once you can start grouping them at 80 , when you step up to 40 it seems a whole lot easier. By the way realize your groups will be a bit bigger the farther away you get unless you are an extremely accomplished shooter, just make sure you group within an acceptable killing area. Best of luck to ya, and good shootin.

Thanks Shane. Thats a good idea. I actully did plan on shooting at 50 yards for that same reason. I got a little cocky due to holding tight, and I mean tight groups at 30 yards. Well, 40 brought me back to earth in a hurry. I'll work on the 40 yard pin cause I beleave it's not an unrealistic shot where I hunt. Thanks

Thats great advice. I also like to shoot from various angles, uphill, downhill. I like to set my target in a wooded area and give myself a small window. When you put yourself though these difficult situations andwhen those shots present themselves in the field, you are ready. Welcome back to archery.

When I shoot and take my time, I'm pretty much as good from 40yds as I am from 30yds.

When I take my time I concentrate more on form and make a good release. The biggest thing I notice at 40yds vs 30yds is wind drift.

You can also shoot at smaller targets at closer distances to similate longer distances. I typically shoot all 20 yard practices at a spot the size of a dime.

I agree with everything that's been said about shooting at longer ranges. When I used to practice out to 30, my effective range was 25-30 for hunting. However, now I practice at 60 and 70 yards and my 40 yard groups are nice and tight. Mymaximum range for hunting is now 40 yards and I'm very confident at that distance and killed one last year right at 40 yards.

I wouldn't hesitate to take a shot at 40yds given the right oppurtunity. It would have to be a standing, full broadside, unobstructed shot.

My shot criteria would be higher but than say a 20 yarder.

check your arrows spine (to see if they are all straight and no bend at all)
