Question about Arrow weight and Speed
I shoot a Bear TRX as listed in sig, it is set at 65-66 pounds of draw weight. I shoot a 29" Draw with a string loop and kisser button on the string.
This year I am looking to get some new arrows and will probably either get Gold Tip XT Hunters 5575 (~8.2 gpi) or some CX 300's (8 gpi). With the Whisker Biscuit rest set back behind the grip a little, I imagine I could go to like a 28.5" arrow or so. What kind of finished weight am I looking at with a 28.5" arrow with 3 vanes and a 100 grain tip? Also, what kind of speeds would you guess I could get out of my bow? Im not a speed freak, and obviously I know I dont shoot a bowtech/mathews, but I imagine it is capable of some decent speed. IBO is 305, AMO/ATA is 234. This is long enough, but lastly, its strictly a hunting bow, so I dont want to go extremely light, but something that will give method trajectory out to like 30-35 yards. The bow is plenty quiet, but I feel like I have some more speed I can get out of it without sacraficing too much in other areas. |
RE: Question about Arrow weight and Speed
What kind of vanes do you shoot? I have heard a formula that you can use to roughly check your speed. It is not 100% accurate, but it is pretty close.
First you have to find out your total arrow weight. Subtract the total arrow weight from the IBO arow weight (350 grains). Subtract 10 fps per inch of draw length under IBO standards (30" ) Subtract weight from IBO standards which I believe is about 2 fps per pound. IBO weight standard is 70 lbs. Subtract string loop speed ( I was told that was 4 fps). Subtract peep site speed ( I was told that was also 4 fps). Subtract silencer weight (1 fps up to 15 fps). I will try to add this up and find your speed. If I remember this correctly I may be between 10 fps. I know this is not close, but it will give you an idea. |
RE: Question about Arrow weight and Speed
I come up with 384 grains:D
|
RE: Question about Arrow weight and Speed
ORIGINAL: newman1 I come up with 384 grains:D I calculated your speed to be about 262 fps with either arrow. The Whisker Buiscut rest takes off a few fps. I remember reading that it takes about 7 fps with a hard helical and 4" vanes. I may be way off, but I have found this method to be +-10 fps. |
RE: Question about Arrow weight and Speed
Im not sure what vanes I will get. I am thinking of going with a 3" helical, or a 4" either offset of helical. If I shoot a small mechanical like a steelhead 100, would the 3" helical be adequate? Or should I get the 4 inch?
|
RE: Question about Arrow weight and Speed
I have heard of people using straight vanes to control mechanicals. I have also heard that the harder the helical the more control you get. I am not sure which would be better for you as I only shoot fixed. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

RE: Question about Arrow weight and Speed
Yeah i knew i would be close.I just chose the 4 inch duravanes;)
|
RE: Question about Arrow weight and Speed
4" Duravanes weight 8 grains right? I used the "4 Duravanes and 4" Bohning vanes, which weight 12.5 grains.
|
RE: Question about Arrow weight and Speed
Go with the 4 inchers,or maybe better yet the 2.5" quickspins.Someone said they are bad a$$ with mechanicals.
|
RE: Question about Arrow weight and Speed
There is no way Bohnings weigh that much,Quickspins are supposed to weigh 12.5 each
|
RE: Question about Arrow weight and Speed
zak123 i guess you were right according to Lancaster archery those Bohning weigh 12.1 grains.I never thought they were that much:)

RE: Question about Arrow weight and Speed
Dangit, I leave for one minute and I could have placed a bet! Thanks Lancaster! [:@]:D

That's why i don't gamble[&:]

RE: Question about Arrow weight and Speed
I would go with the 2" Blazers if you are using mechanicals. The weigh roughly 5.5-5.8 grains a piece. They are listed at 5 grains each but I have weighed several and never got one under 5.5. I have shot 3 Blazers on my arrows with mechanical heads with much success. I am fletching some arrows with 4 Blazers this year and they seem to control the arrows just a tad bit better. They might fly better through a WB than longer vanes.
My old Buckmaster G2 had an IBO rating of 309. I was shooting 383 grain arrows at 268fps so you should be close to that. |
RE: Question about Arrow weight and Speed
G2 what kind of broadheads are you shooting?
|
RE: Question about Arrow weight and Speed
I have been shooting the NAP Scorpion XP 100's. They fly great on my arrows. I put them in the right spot and the deer don't go any farther than 30 yards. I was kinda iffy about the o-ring design but I haven't had any problems with them. There are a lot of cut-on contact mechanicals out now and I'm sure they all work well.
This is my advice on broadheads: I am sure that if they are placed in the right spot on an animal that they would all perform well. You will just have to find which broadhead shoots well for you and be confident with your setup. Then you can concentrate on picking a spot and not worry about your equipment. Read everyone's advice on this forum with an open mind and then make the best decision for you. |
RE: Question about Arrow weight and Speed
I already know which broadheads work great for me.100gr. 4 blade muzzys:Dand am completely confident in my setup that Len and Tony gave me,i was just curious what you were shooting:D

RE: Question about Arrow weight and Speed
;)the quickspin vane are just about right at 12.5 gr ea. i put 3 4in vanes off-set on my arrows they are quiet and fly good. i also shoot the REVELUTION from rocky mountain.100gr broad head it does a great job on deer. jim
