Please adjust the

Please adjust the ability to edit threads or deleting. Someone should not be able to alter a post or delete a topic they started many days later. Ive seen this happen several times when someone throws a tantrum. Then goes back days, weeks, months later and starts deleting topics they started or posts. Only mods/admins and supporting vendors should have the extended time ability.

ibobi 10-08-2018 12:49 PM

That'd be a pretty big site change. Maybe try to get support for this from other users/mods?

CalHunter 10-08-2018 05:33 PM

I can see both sides of the issue. Sometimes we post something and later find out that we were all wrong and would like to have a do-over. And often (if you try to use this sight from a phone), spellcheck twists a lot of the words into something totally different and it's too much hassle trying to fix the misspelled words and wrong words with the phone so you wait until you can get to a laptop or desktop that works with this site. Probably the main reason I rarely use a phone to post on this site and never bother even trying to use a phone to moderate on this site.

On the flip side, the are a few people who decide to leave our fair company and then delete all of the text in their posts. It tends to leave some holes in topics and is more of a pain if they were the topic starter. It doesn't happen too often but once in a while it does.

So I can see both sides of the issue.

ibobi 10-09-2018 09:56 AM

^^^^^^
Me too.

Berserker 10-09-2018 10:31 AM

I was on a site where you couldn't delete post. Annoying. Sometime duplicate, merger posts, or you realize it was wrong, ect.

when you edit a post typically it says edited with time stamp at bottom.

if you quoted post it will still be there.

Gm54-120 11-30-2018 08:36 AM

Well first of all from what im reading on the vbulletin support forum its pretty simple to adjust the post edit time limit. I mean its like a couple minute job.....literally. Is it not similar in this version?
https://www.vbulletin.com/forum/foru...074-time-limit

Secondly because this was not addressed we had a person (who is now banned) delete numerous posts he made. Posts are the property of IB and i see no problem with allowing people to edit their posts unless its just to stir up trouble WEEKS/MONTHS later. Allowing upto a week is more than fair. Allowing more just leaves the opportunity to make a mess of a topic or even a sub forum. The person who did all these deletes/edits flat out stated "i will no longer support this crap hole" in one of his first deletes. His motivation was obvious even though he claimed it was because the forum was slow.

JW 11-30-2018 08:47 AM

I may be wrong as I'm not as computer program say as you are. But the said posts would be useless as the author also deleted his photo account. So the posts made no sense as 1. the photo was deleted and 2. said author deleted his text to which the photo supported.
That left no choice but to remove those threads as they made no sense at all.

Also did create a very unorganized messy forum. So all was soft deleted.

Gm54-120 11-30-2018 10:37 AM

Other than server side caching of photos like in Xenforo software there is no way to deal with deleted off site photo sharing accounts. The only minor consolation is he would also delete any photo links on his own forum and create a mess there that he must deal with. I deleted my photobucket account when they tried the "pay to host". Sadly they brought it back but with watermarks on all the pics.

ibobi 12-06-2018 10:03 AM

It's not the level of effort that's the issue, it's the break with longstanding HN policy about how big the edit window is. I don't see a compelling reason to do it at this time, unless the mods are in favor.

CalHunter 12-06-2018 08:05 PM

Out of curiosity, how big or long is the edit window?

JW 12-07-2018 01:02 AM

If an "time of edit " would have been in place much of the Black powder subforums would have been spared the rant of a disgruntled user.

Bocajnala 12-07-2018 01:32 AM

Weve had some other posters delete allot of their posts too. It makes a mess

-Jake

ibobi 12-07-2018 01:59 PM

I’m not sure let me look.

CalHunter 12-07-2018 06:27 PM

I could see giving a person an hour or 2. Maybe even overnight if they decide to self-moderate a problem post. At some point though, it would seem to detract from the forum and lead to a member deciding years later to self-delete all of their posts which could cause havoc for anybody reading a topic and could injure the usefulness of HNI's SEO if word gets around that our topics are often missing important posts. In the above cited incident, the member started a lot of topics in the BP forum and also posted a lot of useful and technical info as well as field experiences that would be a draw to our site. Losing that info leaves gaps in topics and can be frustrating for a reader who is researching something and sees other members refer to a certain member's posts that have been self-deleted. I know this is a bit of a down-the-road view but, it's also something that could affect HNI's bottom line.

JW 12-08-2018 05:38 PM

And it certainly did. The email I got from this user said he was also deleting his photos.
So it really is a mute point saving any of the topics if the photos are gone.
The forum with the number of Deleted topics that this user edited long after the fact made this forum pure garbage.

So I SOFT DELETED, as that is as all we can do to the many fine topics this guy created. And he was permanently banned for life.
I took the posts down from the beginning as he was the topic starter.
If any MOD or Admin would care to go back to the Traditional sub forum, open a few topics you would will understand.
NOTE:
General users can not see what was taken down.

Certainly was a very low blow.

Gm54-120 12-10-2018 09:43 AM

There is one small consolation to the whole mess. IF he did deleted his photo album he ruined threads he posted on numerous other forums too. Not just his own forum but probably over half a dozen or more forums. That seems pretty extreme even for him. I can tell you for certain right now his photobucket album is still active. Pics from 2012 are still there. Its one of the ways he advertises links to his forum. Which was one of the reasons he posts on other forums. Many of his pics list his forum link. Many of those forums are slow also but i didnt see him do there what he did here. Its pretty obvious there was some other motivation other than HNI is just slow.

ibobi 12-11-2018 10:52 AM

Who thinks the edit window should be smaller -- 24 hours?

CalHunter 12-11-2018 03:55 PM

I would think somewhere between 24-48 or even 72 hours would give anybody more than enough time to self-edit a problem post yet still preserve the integrity of the forums. From what I've observed, the was no apparent time limit and a member could delete their posts going back for several years or even a decade. I don't think anybody would miss all of the "me too" posts but like JW said, this particular member started and then posted a lot of technical info that was pretty much functioning as a resource for a lot of the BP guys. Losing stuff like that does create a gap and a problem. At least IMHO it does.

JW 12-11-2018 04:58 PM

This is a legal question.
I feel once you have posted information on a public domain such as HNI, then HNI now owns said information.
Being told that other articles written by this user are still there on other web sites, I'd like nothing more than go back to a Backup and restore all this user deleted.
He can't come back to wreak havoc again, he is banned. Then if he wants to take all his pictures down so be it, let him screw up everything everywhere. But force this person to do so.
I'm sure he is disgruntled as I gave him 6 months off. That won't be missed.
and I assure you he is reading this.

So I request using a back up to restore.

as far as edit 72 hrs.

JW

Gm54-120 12-11-2018 08:50 PM

3 days is fair. I would even be open to a bit longer.

CalHunter 12-11-2018 08:55 PM

How much longer were you thinking? A week?

Gm54-120 12-12-2018 05:31 AM

Week max but 3 days is plenty fair.

ibobi 12-12-2018 09:49 AM

Edit window is now 72 hours.

JW 12-12-2018 10:48 AM

How about restoring that forum from the backup?

I can give you a date to go back. I'd just need to do a bit of research as I bet this yahoo did this in a day or two.
And the affected forums wouldn't loose much new but gain back it's integrity.

Anyone else agree?

CalHunter 12-12-2018 06:03 PM

I agree with you. Shame to lose all of the content.

ibobi 12-13-2018 11:11 AM

How much content are we talking about?

Bocajnala 12-13-2018 01:08 PM

Allot.

Allot of useable info.

-Jake

Bocajnala 12-13-2018 01:10 PM

It's all soft deleted in the tradition muzzleloader forum. You should be able to view them.

-Jake

Berserker 12-13-2018 02:14 PM

I can see it both ways. Once you post it here it belongs to the forum. But I can also see if the guy doesn't wanna be here let him go. The better question should be how can you get knowledgeable people to come here, not how you can force them to stay.

hubby11 12-14-2018 03:57 AM

My two cents, once you post, it stays. If you posted in anger/error, fine, maybe a few days to amend. Otherwise it stays. If you really regret what you said, post again to apologize or explain. Deletion of posts, like taking your marbles and going home, is childish. And in any case, they are not your marbles.

Berserker 12-14-2018 06:54 AM

Once you post the forum owns it. But what about when you ban a guy. You don't Wan them here, but you want there information.

JW 12-14-2018 12:15 PM

You are free to leave anytime of your own accord.
Break the forum rules and you get forced time away to reflect on what you did.
Be a total nuisance, you are gone for ever and not welcomed back.
Your posts stay as long as they comply with forum rules. Even when permanently banned.

Obviously that is the entire point of a forum. If you dont like it then just dont post. There is no requirement that you make any posts but when you do its not your content anymore. Its right in the Terms of Service/Use you agree to when you sign up.

No poop, I realize no one is holding a gun to my head to post.

Not sure where you got confused about that or what I said that incurred big long cut and paste of forum rules.

Never questioned a rule here. Private property, you can do what you want with it.

I do think there are things you could do to maybe increase traffic, this place is dead. But I really doubt anyone want to hear, or do anything about anyways. As said no gun to my head to post.
