Pronghorn mount
 

I have just received my son's pronghorn mount (it is at the house, I haven't even seen it yet). My question is about the risk of hair slippage. When we handled the animal in the field, the pronghorn hair came out very easily. Does this remain a significant issue with the now tanned hide attached to the mount form? If so, we will need to handle the mount pretty carefully to avoid pulling off hanks of hair just getting the mount onto the wall, right? I had the head mounted on a wooden plaque. How do others handle pronghorn mounts who don't have a wooden plaque, by the horns? Are these sturdy enough to use to move the head?

You dont handle any top quality mount by the body ever. Antlers as well as horns are usually very well attached to the mount, so you can carry them that way. The hair on deer, pronghorn and other hoofed animals is hollow, and will kink when touched. The fact that hair easily falls from the pronghorn might be the fact that theyre loosely rooted, and not from slippage. They will tighten when mounted, but I wouldnt touch it. My pronghorn mounts, for example, have the hair stood up naturally. Touching it would leave terrible marks that would ruin the effect. Hope this helps you. There is a wooden plaque which I held to manouevre the mount onto a picture hook on the wall. There is some hair stood up on this mount also, notably on the neck behind the head.

Just as an aside. We have two schnauzer dogs. The youngest has been spending a lot of time looking at the pronghorn head on the wall and occasionally barking, maybe when some minor house-hold sound occurs and the dog misattributes the sound to the pronghorn. This morning, while our older schnauzer was looking on, I held my hand near the muzzle of the pronghorn and pretended that the pronghorn was biting me. The older, more sedate schnauzer then growled and barked at the pronghorn head as if to protect me. Funny. This is our first mounted head of any kind. I suppose it is sort of a sophmoric thing to do.

As long as you dont handle the hide in any way it will be ok.
