antelope mount over night?
hi everyone, my post is a ? have u ever seen a taxidermist that would do your antelope mount over night? here is the site www.speedgoattaxidermy.com he can do your antelope mount faster than the butcher can cut it up for u! u ask how does he do this? the mount is already done, all that is needed is the horns boiled and the hair of the horn glued on the skull plate! u get a nice mount and don't have to wait! he says he can do deer also, but he has to cut the skull plate? if it is not a book buck i guess it does not matter? check it out!!!

RE: antelope mount over night?
Yes, that is fast. But those mounts look horrible![:-]

RE: antelope mount over night?
i would like to coment back to your reply,( those mounts look horrible,) have u ever seen one! and if u know anything about mounts u know that all there is for a differance is the change of the black hair (or as most people call it the shell). the rest of the mount was done the exact same as your 12month mount , u most be an oldfasion taxidermist? or just can't stand the fact u waited 2 years for the samething?
|
RE: antelope mount over night?
I can almost guarantee that those mounts are not done like I'd do them. They do look horrible. Well maybe not totally horrible, but they sure aren't anywhere near quality or good mounts. There is no way to even tan a hide in that time period.
The only way that you could get a real quality mount with tanned hide in that time frame is if someone is mounting heads ahead of time and simply swapping out horns or antlers. And then you don't get your real hide back. Other than that, just simpe logistics of even using dry preservative(his prices reflect dry preservative route and not tanning) will not allow enough time for drying before painting. Which will lead to cracks around eyes, mouth, nose etc... later on. BTW your comment if you have ever seen one--well yes, look at the website. There is a photo gallery right there. From that anyone thats done quality work can tell right off they are not top of the line works. You provided us with the link to look at the mounts. Jeff Just to be sure I went back and reclicked to enlarge the photos. Looks like he has like 3 or 4 mounts only and duplicate photos of the same ones a few times. Looking closely I don't even think those rate as high as horrible in my books. But if you want cheap and fast, I think you found that for sure. Should have a drive through window like Mc Donalds in that shop. |
RE: antelope mount over night?
hi rost, if u would READ and UNDERSTAND the only differance is the horn shell! the hide was sent to a comercial tannery like yours, then eyes were set, then the skull ptate was bolted on, then sewed up, then the 30 day drying time, then the finish work was done, and the last thing was putting on the HORN SHELL IT JUST SLIDES OVER THE BONE ON THE SKULL PLATE. if anyone would like to reply PLEASE READ AND UNDERSTAND THE PROCESS FIRST!
|
RE: antelope mount over night?
I guess you should reread your post it sure doesn't sound like it is overnight. Any taxidermist can mount a set of antlers on a already done manikan overnight.
|
RE: antelope mount over night?
My mounts won't go there, If I'm going to pay for a mount, I'm going to pay for a quality done mount. After you have mounted deer, it is easy to realize that hurrying the mounting process is a bad idea. It's better to take the time and do a quality job. Just my 2 cents.
|
RE: antelope mount over night?
hi nobody said hurry on the mount , it will take the same time to do as any other mount. but it is worked on before u bring in your antelope, then we take your horn shell of your antelope and place them on the already done mount. this is a over-night process, the next day u can pick up the mount. u don't get your actual cape back, but if there is customer that insist on their actual cape they can do a normal mount. and this process will take no more than 6 months. next time u go to your taxidermist ask him how many hours he spends on just your mount! i can tell u he is not spending any more time than the next guy, he just has to wait 12- 14 months to get started on it! the actual hours if he tans it total = 20- 28 hours if he sends it out to get tanned only= 15-20 hours. HA THATS RIGHT, SO ASK HIM WHY IT TAKES ATLEAST 1 YEAR!!!!!

RE: antelope mount over night?
its kind of obvious this is your company or someones who you know very well.
|
RE: antelope mount over night?
I agree with mammasboy, those mounts don't look professional or realistic.[:-]
|
RE: antelope mount over night?
and another thing, by using a different cape you mount is not going to look anything like your real animal, not even a resemblance. my mount took over 6 months to do but it looks just like the pic.

RE: antelope mount over night?
Hey Manboy-- Maybe its you that can't read-- I said that was one option-- mounting it ahead of time and putting the antlers or horns in. IE I even stated you don't get your cape back.
I have never known anyone that didnt want their complete animal back. Its a new one to me that folks don't care. And FWIW if those mounts pictured took 6-12 months-- wow. Maybe someone needs to attend some schools. Its certainly not award winning work. But then again as stated here at times-- hey if it makes ya happy go for it. Its not fer me. And I'm curious as to how you can get the hair patterns around the bases correct as there are such variations in burr circumferences. More power to ya. |
RE: antelope mount over night?
hi everyone yes it is my company, thought i would try to get some replys on this concept of changing horn shells. i didn't know if people would be interested in that. yes i am new at taxidermy those mounts took average of 4 months each. yes i have a few more things to learn. like today my instructor talked about coloring mounts and using airbrush to blend hair color in the cape. so put makeup on the deer?? oh and cnhntr all antelope capes look the same (bucks have a black patch on their cheek, does do not) as far as each looking differant?? i see antelope everyday how about u? also i will post a pic. for u that do not understand the horn shell. as far as the burr area i don't change deer but u could with a shed skull plate, oh never mind it is to hard for most to understand! and all the post on horrible mounts i would like to pics. on some good ones please??? thank u all for your honest replys!! ronnie miller

RE: antelope mount over night?
i forgot rost how many hours do spend on just one mount? thanks
|
RE: antelope mount over night?
No thanks....They just don't look professionally done to me.
|
RE: antelope mount over night?
I would want my own cape on my animal. As simple as that. I have several bucks mounted in my basement. And every cape looks very different regardless of whether they came from the same piece of property or not. Maybe it's for some people, just not me. Just my .02

RE: antelope mount over night?
While at school they told us to figure a minmum of 12 hours. Thats been a few years ago. I figure 2 hours customer time minimum. 15 minutes to measure. 1 hour to skin. 2 hours to flesh and salt. 1.5 hours to prep manikin, set antlers, set eyes. 3-5 hours of mounting and pinning time. 2 hours to trim, epoxy nose, eyes, etc....Another 30 min to paint and tone everything. Another 30 minutes to do last minute finish work to it all. Figure 30 minutes time to order form etc....Then of course there are things like taking to tannery and picking up etc... the things you never add in.
Thats 13.25 to 15.25 hours and it always seemed like by the time I was done and added it all together including answering the phone etc.... it basically burned up 2 total days. How long in days from start to finish? depends on how much work I had backlogged. A year is common, less is better. Of course you need to have enough work to last you all year so a year to get a mount back is about what I expect. Time wise it takes me about 2 weeks to get to fleshing and salting and tagging. 3 months is pretty average for a local tannery to do wet tans. Measure and have forms a week or two later. Mount in the next few weeks. Let dry a month or more depending on conditions. Paint drying at least one week minimum. Shortest time frame would be 6 months on a deer head. Other variables as to tannery time can change that. Usually adding to the time frame. And non of the above is considering the time to seperate horn cores, clean the skull plate and epoxy cores back to horns. Any other questions? Oh yeah, I did a dry preservative quicky mount on a bet one time with a friend. Had a form that would fit. Brought deer in. 4 hours later it was mounted. Of course it was like our local taxidermists have done for years. No detail, cheap everything, no one cares. If its stuffed its good. Of course we still had to wait a few weeks plus for it to dry. |
RE: antelope mount over night?
Looks like your kids drew on your turkey tail mount... ;)
|
RE: antelope mount over night?
Ive been reading this and watching your guys exchange, and two things jump out at me. First off, all pronghorn capes do NOT look the same. The markings vary, the color and contrast varies and the color of the facial markings do, too. Second, the horn cores vary in angle as well as width, so the horn sheath needs to go back onto its original cores to look correct. I might be an easterner, but Ive done my share of pronghorns, enough to know that much. Good luck on your mounts, fellas.

RE: antelope mount over night?
bill i'm glad the two of us have the same opinion of antelope capes color, pattern, ...ect.
|
RE: antelope mount over night?
2 dumba$$ don't make 1 right!
|
RE: antelope mount over night?
just because I'm a taxidermist's somewhat "apprenace", I know quite a bit about what animals look like male and female alike! I didn't say anything about using a doe cape now did I? I think not.
|
RE: antelope mount over night?
lol,
walk into cabelas, or bass pro, or any other sporting goods store and look at there mounts there. they are all different. not every animal has the same charicteristics. like said the horns could be angled differnet. i personaly would be Pi@@ed off if i had a antelope that the horns laid pretty much flat on and when i got it back they were straight up like most other antelope. Id rather wait a yr and get back my own animal and have it be perfect, and all around awesome, than have to wait 2 days and get one back that doesnt look anything like the animal that i had taken. |
RE: antelope mount over night?
I definately would want my own cape
|
RE: antelope mount over night?
2 wrongs dont make a right, but I sure say that a bunch of well trained and educated folks have chimed in here and those overwhelm the thread starter.
That being said-- manboy-- take the criticism as constructive. I did mounts like yours when I started on my own. They looked bad but were free to my family and friends. I was learning. But I decided if I did it to make money I needed school to learn the ART of taxidermy. I'd suggest that for you also. Especially since you evidently have most of the main steps down. It takes only more time and effort(and having to charge more) to turn out work thats worthy. You have a golden chance here if you really care about quality and your customers! I quit the trade full time because folks in the rural community would not pay what its worth to have a good mount. And that may be your case. In that case, if you stick with it, you have to do what you are. Taking shortcuts and turning them out as fast as you can. That type of work is cheaper and has to rely on quantity. Good luck either way. My schooling was some of the best money I ever spent. Jeff |
RE: antelope mount over night?
Cnhntr, you and me are dumbasses, huh? Hahaha, maybe this guy would be surprised to know who us dumbasses are...
|
RE: antelope mount over night?
Isn't it obvious there is very little knowledge with manboy if he doesn't recognize your name Bill!. I'm not sure about cnhntr-- don't have his name.
Thanks for posting here. Everyone can use help at times. I've been doing this since 79 and still run into interesting situations...... Nope ya'll are not the the DA category. Jeff |
RE: antelope mount over night?
rost, acually i'm a girl but that's ok
|
RE: antelope mount over night?
I really am not impressed with the quality of those mounts either. Just poorly done.
|
RE: antelope mount over night?
hi everyone, i started this thread for one simple reason. to see if more than just my friends from wisconsin are interested in getting a pronghorn mount back fast. where they didn't have to pay shippng or make a second trip out here. the reason was not for those 20 year vet. taxidermist to shoot someones work down, but that does not matter i am not going to stop taxidermy. i also know if u have a wide, unusual, or just want your own cape back OF COARSE U GET IT BACK AND IT TAKES ME 6 MONTHS. but i also know there are some people who will like the idea of not waiting. thank you ronnie

RE: antelope mount over night?
Manboy, you might wanna get the posts straight. Call me what you want, but I didnt call you any name, mention the quality of your work, or anything else OTHER than agree with someone in here that capes on pronghorns do vary. Yes, I enjoy the taxinet, but I think Ill just go ahead and settle in and get comfortable in here too. Hope that doesnt make you uncomfortable...

RE: antelope mount over night?
Jeff, do you know many of the taxidermists that post in here? Im kinda new to this, so Im just learning who is who. Looks like a good group, where you can talk a bit more hunting along with some tech talk in between. How did things go this season in Texas?
|
RE: antelope mount over night?
Hey Bill,
I am from Ohio. Talked with you a couple of times at the " Ole Buckeye Mannikins " summer show they used to have in August. I still have some pics of you demonstrating how to alter a mannikin there. I am usually here and there in the forums, but like you, I like the hunting and tech talked combined. :) ORIGINAL: Bill Yox Jeff, do you know many of the taxidermists that post in here? RE: antelope mount over night?
Hi Bill
I'm new here as you can see by my post #s. I don't know that many but like you am learning. I kinda suspect this forum is like discussing taxidermy in Outdoor life. Whereas I should be snooping around on a dedicated site. Yet I'm not here for the taxidermy. I'm going backward in my aging and trying to learn some about elk hunting etc.... Yet I can't stay away from a few things I know a bit about like taxidermy and shooting. I'm out of taxidermy full time due to some family issues and a few others called retirement and insurance benefits. I can just squeak in 25 years and be ok by retirement. But I still do the taxidermy a bit at a time here on the side. In fact today I'm trying to help a young man learn at the shop so he can get started a bit too. Gotta head out for that soon. Our season looked pretty decent overall. At least part time will allow me to get to my stuff and my wifes stuff ;) And allow us to go out of state here and there more.. Cnhntr I'm sorry I gave you a male moniker. My apologies. Still guessing as to a famous name..... Best, Jeff |
RE: antelope mount over night?
Ronnie
In fairness you have hit a niche. Some folks want it mcdonalds fast regardless of looks or if its theirs or not. I hope you can cash in on that. FWIW I've never had anything done where I hunted at. I just dont' have enough background n taxidermists quality. Even what you see in the showroom and what you get back can be different by worlds. And then there is customer satisfaction and longevity etc.... Hard to tell so thats why I had a taxidermist at home and brought it all back to him. After all once you know the main basics lots of it is simply care and reference material. Those folks you'll never change. One thing I can totally say is that if you continue your route - premounting etc.... Charge those folks that are in a hurry well. That kind of 24 hour service is priceless regardless. After a time you get tired of calls at 3am etc..... I know-- I used to say 24 hour call in my phone book. But after years and realizing that if you got up at 3am for anyone else it would be double time and its not in your own business-- well you get the idea. Jeff |
RE: antelope mount over night?
here's a mount a guy got back to me in 6 weeks by doing his own tanning in house....now notice the little gray-black spots on the white under it's chin....and also the thin spot in his fur below the antler on his shoulder from fighting....now if ya look at the mount you will see the same things there also....that would mean alot to me that i know it's my deer i got back......................bob
|
RE: antelope mount over night?
nice buck bob!
|
RE: antelope mount over night?
These are my mounts.I waited 6 months for them but there 100% all my animal. I personaly could never understand how someone could shoot a beutiful trophy and put someone elses cape on it. I rather show pictures for 6 months then have someone elses cape on my wall. Would you want to bring your deer to a butcher and as soon as you drop it off have him give you cuts of meat thats not yours. I'm not mocking your mounts they look better then i could ever do. I did do the skull myself though. I would just want my own cape. That's just my opinion.. Happy Hunting everyone
