Help with goat scalp
 

About 2 or more months ago i shot a goat. After a struggle we toke the head off and then later at camp we use a haxor to cut the scalp off. We then tied the horns to a tree and then our next trip we toke them home. The fur is still on and its stiting in our backyard. This is a really unprofessional job and since it is my first trophy (nothing special but its my first) im not worried about going and getting it mounted on wood. The problem is that i have seen bugs crawling in it and it smells a bit. I would like to have this site on top of my open cuboard in my room. Is there a chemical that will kill the bugs and rid the smell while keeping the hair as it is.

Also i have a fox tale i would like to have in room and it is currently sitting in our shed getting ruined. This to has a smell what chemical should i use to get rid of the smell but still keep the red colour. I have thought about using human shampoo on both but im not sure.

First, you need to get the hide off. You'll probably need to soak it in water for a couple days, and the smell won't be pleasant. After that, cut ALL of the meat away. It helps to apply some borax, wait a few days, and I like to grind away what's left with a Dremel, once it's dried. Then, you need to remove the horns from the cores and clean the cores. Place the whole thing in a plastic bag for a week or so and they should pop off, though may take some persuasion. Clean the cores well and bondo the horns back on. No matter how clean the skull plate is, bugs will still get in the cores if they're not removed and cleaned.
As for the fox tail, pitch it. It needed the bone removed and then it would have needed to be tanned. There's no way to save it now.
