Coyote or Bear skull?
 

my uncle timmy found this skull on his property in Schoharie county,NY. we are all arguing over if it is a bear skull or a coyote skull. what do you guys think? it looks like bear to me bc it is very big and the canines and incisors are huge! i wish i coulda taken a pic of the teeth.damn i will take more pics when i go back up there for turkey.

What part of schoharie county are you from?? I am from the town of Schoharie.. That skull to me looks like a bear skull becuase of the huge canine.

Iam sure it is not a bear skull,i have two of my own bear skulls sitting in front of me and they don't look like any thing like the picture,where the nose meets the forehead it is too steep of a slope,you need to measure the length of the skull.a blackbear could be any where from 10 inches long to 12 inches. 10 being very small and 12 inches being big and also measure the width.and let us know what you come up with.

The picture makes me think it's a bear skull or one of a large dog. It sure doesn't look like a coyote though, because the nose just looks too broad.

Bears must be different in Canada as it matches my Black Bear skull pretty closely.
It is an old skull for sure. The entire lower jaw is missing. The bridge of the snout has sunken and a little different from my complete younger Bear skull.
I will print out the picture and stop by my Taxidermist on the way to dinner tonight. He probably does more bears in the state of Montana than anyone and has at least 50 in his shop on any given day ready to be shipped out.
It's my opinion that it's a old Bear that has been disfigured by the elements for sitting so long.

I don't believe that our bears in Canada are any different then yours.I could be wrong on my thoughts of the skull,but the slope of the skull looks pretty steep to me ,but i am looking forward to see what your taxidermist has to say

Finally got ahold of my taxidermist. He say's it looks more like a Grizzly skull than a Black Bear. I told him it came from New York but still say's it looks like a grizz from what he can make out in the picture.
Trapper I didn't mean the Bears between Montana and BC we different I believe this skull came from New York. I thought maybe a sub-species being from the other side of the country. I have taken quite a few Whitetails and some have the long slender nose and others have the stubby Roman Type. Thaat's what I was trying to say:)

Turkey hunter. I know for a fact that there is no way in H*ll that can be a bear or a coyote skull. because bears and coyotes do not have a forehead that tall. I own a collection of books and I just looked up a bear skull and Coyote skull and I compared the pic to my pics. the closest animal I could think of is may be a domestic dog or with a very rare eception you may have a wolverine skull. but highly unlikely.
