Shoulder Mount Caribou Value?
 

I will be moving soon and would like to know if anyone here might have some input on..if a shoulder mount caribou head would have any value? My now deceased husband hunted this caribou on one of his Alaska hunts twenty something years ago. If there is some value..would you dare to speculate and give me some ranges?

Sorry about the loss of your husband. Regarding your question, most (some may) hunters would likely not be interested in buying a trophy mount from another hunter. However, the larger box stores (Bass Pro, Cabelas, Dick's / Field & Stream, Gander Mountain) often buy mounts for store display. Try contacting them. You may be able to get a couple of hundred dollars for it. Good luck.

There are people who appraise wildlife mounts, of course you have to pay them. The value of taxidermy specimens will depend on the age of the specimen, the skill of the taxidermist and where the animal stood in the record books if at all. You may want to think about donating it to a natural history museum or a wildlife conservation organization to be auctioned off at one of their fund raiser functions, either one could give you a tax deduction if they are a 501 3C organization. Most of the time, the value of a mount lies with the person who took the animal and the memories that come back when they look at it.

Caribou mounts are pretty common. Unless it is a huge bull that will place high in the record books you'll be lucky to get $350 out of it. The problem with selling trophies is that, with a few exceptions, they only have value to the person that did the hunting. Some examples of exceptions are the real oddities like Takin, Siaga , a really big mulie or things no longer hunted like Guar and Hirola antelope. You could pretty much set your own price on those. But caribou are still wildly available to most hunters.

I've been doing a bit of Googling and it appears that the value others are putting on their caribou heads are all over the place? Ebay seems to be quite high..of which doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Anyway, I do believe I'll begin with calling some of my more local hunting stores.
