are bugs in mounts a big problem?
 

does anyone have an idea how common moths and beetle problems are on mounts? is there any all natural cures? pesticides and chemicals may damage mounts and effect people. not home remedies but commercially for sale products to kill and prevent problems.

If you have an insect problem with a mount the tanning of the skin was not done correctly.

I have several bird mounts from the 1970s and they look as nice today as they did back then.

One method you can do - big clear plastic bag like a Zip-Lock bag - they make some big ones. Insert your mount - spray a 2 second burst on the inside of the bag itself do not spray on mount or wet mount using a can of Raid House and Garden and seal the bag. Leave that sealed for 2 to 3 days.

That will surely fumigate.

But if yo ugot bugs take the mount back to your Taxidermist.

Improper tanning may be an issue but, it does not mean the product was bad if it got bugs. Arsenic was used until the late 80's or 90's but over the years the tanning is better but not for bug protection. Raid and stuff like that can damage mounts if used too much and has no lasting effects.

yes, it does mean the product was bad if it got bugs. a properly tanned cape shouldnt get bugs. take the mount back to your taxi and demand a refund.

bugs such as moths feed on the base of the hair (or fur) which has nothing to do with the tanning process. back in the day of arsenic that did not always happen because the chemical was in the hair also. it was also very bad for anyone touching it. over the years some could wear off and damage is possible. for the "fly by night " taxidermists who do not tan their skins it will happen quicker. if you get bugs in your mounts it is not because you have a dirty house or your taxidermist is incompetent. it can happen to anyone. more so if your trophy room is located in a high traffic area with direct access to the outside. the more proactive you are with your trophies ( cleaning and grooming), the less chance you will have of getting bugs.

remember the moths that attack your trophies are the same ones that destroy your expensive clothes and carpets and furniture. does that mean those items were made wrong also?

my original question was; is it a big problem? is there any other cure than raid bombs and toxic chemicals? i know several people who have had big problems but it isn't a sublect people just freely talk about around the water cooler. maybe a little shy?
