Default cleaning up skull cap.

Ive dried out the skull cap in salt and its been about a week since then. i was wondering if i should peel off the remaining membrane inside the brain cavity and on top of the skull cap?
its my first buck and im trying to mount it the right way.

Its not a big deal. You got the salted part so pull whatever you can off and do er up. Typically you would pull that membrane off before salting and cut all the meat and stuff off you can, salt the skull, and put it up to dry a couple days. Brush all the salt off and clean any blood off the rack and put it into line in storage until you get to mounting it.

Just throwing out my opinion, but that’s not the way I clean skull caps. I don’t consider salt the final step for anything. It may slow down bugs, but it won’t prevent them entirely. I use borax or DP instead, and when dry I go back and remove ALL tissue with a die grinder. A Dremel will work as well. I prefer there to be zero tissue left when I mount a deer. Maybe it’s just me, but I’m willing to spend the extra 5 minutes

Actually, the borax isn’t all that important, as long as all of the tissue is removed. Borax and dry preserve are just a “cleaner” way to dry out the tissue than salt, and prevents any bugs when I have a bunch of racks lying around drying. Again, this is just how I do things, but I feel better knowing the skull plate is completely clean.
