You asked for the price of a DEER or ELK head. An elk head will be hundreds more than a deer head.

I've seen deer heads range from $300-600 and elk are significantly more.

The range he gave you was between the cheapest deer and most expensive elk. It's like you asked how much it costs to buy a car. While the Ford Focus and Mercedes 600 are both cars, they will vary in price quite a bit - like $100,000.

It also depends on your geographic location and the quality and reputation of the taxidermist.

My brother shot his first elk last year in colorado. Took it to some guy in New Castle, CO and spent right above $1000 for a shoulder mount. the guy did a great job but it was a little pricey.

I guess not one wants to come clean! I've been in the taxidermy business for thirty years, if I could get 800.00 for a shoulder mount deer i would because i think thats what my taxidermy and time is worth, But I can't, every local economy is different.
With that said i think NO one should overcharge for a basic shoulder mount, the answer you're looking for is as varied as opinions on gun/ammo discussions.
Find a local taxidermist in your area and compare prices.
I charge 475.00 and everyone is happy!

for true museum quality work well over $600 for a deer shoulder mount

BarnesX.308 08-21-2010 05:10 AM

and it's climbing every year. In 2000 I paid $375. This year it's $575. If the work is very good, I'd be afraid to trust anyone else.

My taxidermist here in Colorado charges $575 for deer and from $900-$1200 for elk depending on size for his shoulder mounts. For an open mouth (bugling) on elk you will have to add on another $150.

Here is the work he has done for me.

15 years ago, it was nothing to pay $350 to get a deer head mounted.

That was about the going rate.

Then the local taxidermist won a bunch of competitions and started his own school and now his time and work is worth a lot more money.

5 years ago, my Brother Tom shot a nice 10 point buck. It was about the 10th rack that I had taken to this guy. At the same time, this guy also has done at least a dozen mounts for my brother in law - who would like to be a professional hunter if he could.

So - me saying that maybe I deserve a better price for my deer mounts would be a understatement. While my Brother shot a nice buck last year and I talked him into getting it mounted.
IN all actuality, he had hunted on this particular piece of ground since he was 12 years old and as far as I know, this was only about his 4th buck that he had shot in his entire life and was the first buck he had ever shot at camp. So this deer was pretty special to him. 185 lbs field dressed in Pennsylvania is a very large deer in the big woods.

The taxidermist wanted $575.00 and my brother paid him cash the same day he had the deer caped out. He just got it back about a month ago. So there was no preferential treatment here.

I would only imagine that with the economy being as bad as it has been that this year his prices will probably be in the range of $600.00 for a shoulder mount.

A Elk I would imagine is around $1000.00

He never seems to run out of work, as a matter of fact, there is always a waiting list of customers waiting to get their animals mounted by him and his staff. By the time he gets all his last years animals mounted, it will be Turkey Season and he will have to start all over again.

In my shop a Deer shoulder mount goes for $555.00 & an Elk shoulder mount goes for $995.00
