Cape life?
How long will a cape be good in a freezer?
|
Depends how it is sealed and frozen. What are we talkin here, caped folded with ears and face in the center, not caped still on the head, double bagged, tanned, ect??? Ears are the first to freezer burn. WCL

Well I really dont know how its situated inside of the bag, I had them cape it out at the local meat locker. All I know is its double bagged in trash bags and it does have the head and antlers attached.

Don't know your situation. I'm guessing a money concern at the moment or something but I'd suggest if you are thinking it will be in your freezer for atleast a year or even a couple months for that matter to get it caped out as soon as possible and fold the face and ears in the center so they are not exposed and freeze. Once frozen then bag it a couple times, get as much air out as possible and seal really good. If its a buck you think you may mount some day its worth getting the cape saved. You can have a taxi cape it for you for a fee and then most taxis if you bring it back tot hem to mount that will come off your bill since they caped it already and if you decide against mounting it in the future. You could sell your cape to the taxi or online and atleast get your caping fee money back or more depending. Even after a couple months of a deer being in the freezer still on the head the ears can be very tough to turn exspecially on older deer that are tougher to turn as it is. Any animal I kill is immediatly caped and froze that day. They are so much easier to turn and work with compaired to even a deer that hung for 3 days. Nothing better than customers bringing you a fresh kill. Anyways if you are gonna freeze it for awhile get him caped if not you run the risk of freezerburn to the face and ears. WCL

Thanks WCL....I did get him in the freezer pretty quick, and what happened is I shot a 8pt that is really dark horned, looks like a deer from Canada, and I was on the fence about having him mounted. Well during gun season I shot a big wide 6 pt, he had no browtines, and I hadnt planned on doing anything but a euro mount on him, but the more I look at the 6, the more he grows on me, and I am thinking of using the cape from the 8 to mount the 6.

Should we salt capes that are to be frozen? I've heard we shouldn't?

Should we salt capes that are to be frozen? I've heard we shouldn't? Never, it defeats the reason you salted it.
|
Do not salt and put in freezer! They use salt on roads to keep them from freezing.
