Is This A Big Neck?
My taxidermist told me my bucks neck size. It's 22" at the most narrow spot. Measured on the inside of the cape? Would this be considered big for a whitetail? Thanks.

RE: Is This A Big Neck?
Not super large, but a good mature buck in the Northern states,if it was measured just below the ears.

RE: Is This A Big Neck?
Yes. He measured at the very top of the neck where it joins the head. Measured on the inside of the hide.
He said that's about maximum for PA. He gets Canadian whitetails that average that but push it up much farther. 27" was the biggest he's done. |
RE: Is This A Big Neck?
Sounds like a C measurement. But could be a B depending on how he measured it. Alotof guys use the B over the C so not sure which he is talking about. If it was a C measurement then thats a pretty good neck for your region. If it was a B then its average. Biggest I had here in WI this year was a 25" B (maybe a 25.5 but put it on a 25") with a full swell which is about a 22.5" C. I find it hard to beleive that he did a deer with a 27" C measurement but I could be wrong. WCL

RE: Is This A Big Neck?
From what he showed me, it was the C. The measurment tight against the head. The buck weighed 230lbs live.
The 27" neck was from a Canadian buck. He does several from Alberta and Saskatchewan every year. |
RE: Is This A Big Neck?
I have a big Ohio buck that I harvested with my compound in 2006. It is a main frame 10 point with 4 kickers from 1 1/2" to 3". It has a 26" neck at the " C " measurement and weighed 304" on the hoof. It scored 156 7/8.

RE: Is This A Big Neck?
That's a nice buck. I'm hoping to get a picture of mine this weekend. It is put together and drying right now. Maybe it will be ready this weekend. He needs to paint the nose, etc...
Mine doesn't have the thick winter coat that would make it look even bigger, but he does show a lot of detail through his October coat. The swollen neck makes him look like a linebacker. Here's a picture of a big-bodied buck my buddy shot on our property. I don't know what its neck measurement was but it was a heavy deer. On the downward slide, rack-wise. Only had 5 points. He was 8.5yo. |
RE: Is This A Big Neck?
Here's my buck dead, bled out, gutted and hanging. :D He looks better now that he's mounted. :D
|
RE: Is This A Big Neck?
Uww! Next time you get a big buck your mounting don't hang them by a rope that touches the cape. Your gonna break and rub off hair doing that. Def a big deer though... This is a 25 inch B with a 22.5 C on a semi upright form so yours will be similar to this next wise. These are pics from when he was still wet and some adjustments were made. Its gone now and I forgot to take finished pics owell. WCL

RE: Is This A Big Neck?
Mine is on a MacKenzie 8400. Slight right turn. It does look similar to that.
I screwed up hanging him like that. If I remember correctly, we just hung him with the rope I dragged him with. We were hanging him for a short time and then taking him down to the taxidermist and butcher. I guess we home him head up to drain the remaining blood. Next time, I'll be a lot more careful. We were caught up in the heat of the moment, I guess, and not thinking. :D |
RE: Is This A Big Neck?
Here's a more respectful picture of the buck. I'll post pictures of the mount as soon as it's ready.

RE: Is This A Big Neck?
He's a nice looking mature buck.

RE: Is This A Big Neck?
Thanks. My buddies and I have recently discussed this. And, with vatiations in weather, mast crop, etc...you aren't always going to have huge racks. So the goal should be to get a mature buck. It's the ultimate challenge, and most years the mature buck IS going to have a nice set of antlers.

RE: Is This A Big Neck?
That one is an 8600. The 8400 is the same only it has the offest shoulder. I really like the offset shoulders cuz it shows more body.... Yeah alotof people don't think about it when they have a deer they are going to mount. See people drag it out with ropes tied around the neck. Worst thing to do is drag them behind a fourwheeler. If you go over alot of logs and ruff terrain the hair on the point of shoulder will wear off or break. Also breaking allows blood to leech into the hair and stains the hairs. Did this one this year that was drug like that that had hair on both shoulders really broke and stained. Tried to tuck it and blend as best I could.Had alot of tick damage on the chest as well. This is an 8400 only its a 23 inch B. Customer didn't even care and thinksthe mount is great which is good I guess.WCL

RE: Is This A Big Neck?
I drug it about 100 yards to the 4 wheeler. We heeved it on the rack of the 4 wheeler and rode it home. No dragging behind a 4 wheeler. I wouldn't do that to a doe. :D
|
RE: Is This A Big Neck?
Yeah thats what I was getting at. Just don't understand why people choose to drag their trophy behind a fourwheeler when they can just through it up on the rack. Haha just don't make sense but alot of people do it. Sounds like ya took good care of him. Yeah draggin by hand doesnt hurt the cape but behind a motor vehicle it does alot of the time. WCL

RE: Is This A Big Neck?
I built a nice trailer to pull behind my 4 wheeler. It's the ticket! Haul my gear in with it, and haul my deer out in it. Plus, it's alot lower to the ground, so I can just drag my deer up on it easily, instead of trying to load him up on the rack, which was my old method.
