Turning euro into shoulder mount
I took a pretty good 6 pointer (for here) on 11/28. I've never had a euro mount deer.....and I thought this one was a good candidate. I gave it to a guy who does them the next day.
On the next day.....I was walking an area I had deicded to stay out of.....and came across the buck I shot a few weeks earlier. Now....I wish I'd had the 6 pinter shoulder-mounted (as I will do a euro on the late recovered buck). From a taxidermist's POV......are there extra charges that revolve around turning the euro into a shoulder mount? Let's say, for exmple....I put the word out that I want a 2.5yr old buck cape (from my friends....next or this season). From a taxi's standpoint.....what difference does it make which deer he's caping out? Would the differntial (potential) in rack bases be an issue? Thanks! |
RE: Turning euro into shoulder mount
Jeff, if you can provide the cape....there shouldn't be any real difference in price. If you can't provide the cape...obviously you'd have to buy one. Getting a cape this time of year should be no problem, you can just go to a deer processor, and ask them to cape one of them for you (many folks don't take the horns). They might charge you a tad to do it. Also, most taxidermists will have extra capes lying around, or a source to get one quick. Rack bases shouldn't be a major issue for him.

RE: Turning euro into shoulder mount
I just had a call with the same scenerio. A guy had a Euro from 3 years ago...he is kicking himself for not shoulder mounting it. His buddy shot a similar aged buck with similar mass. I didn't charge extra as there wasn't any additional work to be done. I always keep about 3-4 extra capes in the freezer just incase someone needs to buy one.....if this is the case, then of course the mount will cost extra. Each taxidermist may be different, but I don't charge extra if there isn't any extra work that is needed. As far as size, it is easier to cut the antler burrs of a cape a little bigger to fit a rack than it is to go the opposite way (larger rack to smaller rack) Just try to find a nice looking cape, similar age, and similar mass to the buck your mounting and you won't have any problems.

RE: Turning euro into shoulder mount
this is why i wait til the season is over to take deer to my taxidermist ,you never know what may show up the next hunt.
my taxidermist started putting out the word a few years ago to hunters that he needed extra capes. now he always has plenty of capes on hand in case a customer needs one. the group i hunt with has given him 6-7 this year. |
