Caping a deer...
 

I harvested a buck that I am considering getting mounted. We process allour deer ourselves, so I will have to cape it out myself. I have never done this before, neither have any of my buddys. I got some directions online and it seems pretty straight forward.

Are there any things I should be aware of or extra precautions to take before doing this? How difficult is this process for a first timer? Should I just take it somewhere and have them do it? I was considering doing this, but like I said, we like to process them oursleves so I think it would be more of a pain getting it caped somewhere then bring it back to be processed. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

P.S. Anyone know a good taxidermist around Mid-Michigan?

Use a good sharp knife and keep it sharp. also make sure that you start near the center of the deer so the taxidermist has plenty of cape to work with. Also go slow around the legs so you dont make a hole.

Just roll the hide down the neck and cut off the neck leaving the hide attached to the head and the head unskinned, leave that to the taxidermist. My web site also shows how it should be caped. Good luck. Let me know if you need any help.

Why are you caping it? Take the head andhide to the taxidermist. He will cape it AFTER he takes the measurements he needs. That's what we're paid for. Personally, I prefer people not try to cape their own. I end up fixing cuts, plus there are a number of measurements needed beforehand.
