does it matter?

I HAVE A DEER HEAD SETTING IN MY BUILDING THAT IS ROTTING (3 MONTHS NOW) . IS IT TO LATE TO EURO MOUNT IT? I MEAN IS IT OK TO TRY TO BOIL IT? ALSO SOME ONE MENTIONED TO ME ,TO DIG AHOLE AND AND PUT THE HEAD IN IT AND THEN DIG IT BACK UP IN SPRING. DOES THAT WORK? IF SO... HOW LONG DO YOU WAIT TO DIG IT UP AND DO YOU COVER THE ANTLERS. WHAT KEEPS THINGS FOR EATING AT THE ANTLERS WHILE THERE IN THE GROUND? THANKS FOR ANY ADVICE GIVEN.

RE: does it matter?

No, it's not too late. If you want to do it yourself, SIMMERING, not boiling would be the easiest and best for you.

Tie it to a center block. Put it on top of an ant bed and check it in two weeks.

Ants aren't very active in January, at least not here. The snowcover keeps them away. LOL. You can simmer it, but it's gonna stink...bad. A little Vicks rubbbed under your nose may help. If it were me I would fill a Rubbermaid tub with water and drop it in there. Leave it for a few weeks and check on it. This is called maceration. It works very well and isn't harsh on the bones like simmering.

I agree that maceration is the best method, but it's going to take a long time in the winter, unless you keep it in the house. I would NOT suggest that. :D

how long should it take in water? i will have to keep it in a non heated building, will that matter? what if it freezes? do i keep the antlers out of the water or does it matter? will i still have to scrap it clean? if so, how do you get the brain area clean? thanks for all the in put from everyone.
