To mount or not to mount...
Hi everyone, I had a question thats be on my mind fora while. I'll be going deer hunting for the first time in november but im not sure if i actually kill anything should i mount the head/shoulder or just take the antlers and mount them? Biggest worry is that customs will let me through with a deer head mount and even if i can carry it i doubt as hand luggage if its big and too heavy, not sure if i would be better with antlers but its my first kill so i want it to be really memorable and cool :)

You can leave it with a taxidermist in the states, and they can ship it to you when complete. Much easier that way.

Would it cost me alot of money? I wouldn't like to thnk that customs would not let it through.

Your mount most likely will not be completed by the time you go back. You can expect 6 months to a year beforea shoulder mountwill be finished. Unless you have plans of staying here that long. Get with the taxidermist you decide to use and find out about the shipping costs and all the details. You may get on the UPS website and check on shipping a package to your home from where your taxidermist is. It would be an oversized box about 25 pounds.

You may also want to consider a European mount since you live in Europe. If you are hunting with relatives or friends you may be able to have it boiled and done and carry it back with you. (call the airline, a skull would certainly be an interesting carry on piece) Keep in mind that these skull mounts are getting more and more popular here in the new world.
If you could not carry it on, it would be light weight if you box it up, any surcharge would not be too stiff. It could even be part of your allowed luggage if you travel light. Bob (Check what is allowed through customs first though. I would think that would not be a problem.) |

To be honest i'd rather have the American style mounts with the full shoulder mount instead of a skull. If shipping isnt going to be very expensive then i'll just pay and have it shipped to me. |
