velvet antlers....

I got a Muley I shot back in september. Its a smaller 4x4 so I planned on doing a european type mount with the horns. I cut his bottom jaw off, wrapped the top part of the skull in a plastic bag leaving the velvet horns exposed and then put it in my deep freeze. The velvet was barely starting to peel with hard horns underneath how do I preserve the velvet cheaply???

RE: velvet antlers....

You can use a tan called "antler in velvet". You can get it at Van Dykes Taxidermy online. I just did an 8 pt I got this year and it turned out great. Just follow the directions. Good luck. Be sure though to tan them first before you do the skull and then be extra careful while doing the skull!

Either use the antler in velvet as mentioned $12.99 QT, or find a taxidermist with a freeze dryer and find out cost for that.

strutnbuck....thx for the tip on preserving the velvet. I'm about to order a quart of the solution.....how far will that go (or approx. how many sets of velvet horns will a quart do?)
