First deer hide

I just shot my 5th doe. I would like to tan it.Myfriend told me of an easy waythat he uses to tan the pelts of the animals he traps.
He said to take the pelt, flesh it, and salt it for a night or two. Then moistenthe fleash sideand sprinkle as much alum on it as it can soke up. Leave it sit for the amount of time needed for the alum to work (depends on the thickness of the hide). Afterwords, when thepelt is done, it is hard as a rock. So pull, streach, twist, and work it till it is soft and pliable.
After reading about the other different ways to tan, this method was the simplest. I tested it out on a rabbit and it worked quite well. It was very soft and easy to work with. Im still nervouse about trying it on a deer hide because I have read everything about making solutions and using other tools that i dont have access to. Does anyone have any advice that might help me get better results?

Another problem im having is ticks in the fur. Any suggestions?

You should also have an oil to soften the hide.{tanning oil or neats foot oil}

Either Van Dykes or McKenzie (I forget which) has a kit to do a hide. They sell it to taxidermists tosell to their clients so that they (taxidermists) don't get bogged down doing hides. It comes with a video and all the necessary chemicals and is purported to be a do it yourself type of thing. Only costs 25 bucks or so.
