Had some 3D fun today.
Greg/MO, mobow, and a friend of his Pauland I went to a 3D shoot near Alton, IL today. Then when we were finished, we found out momightymight and the Other Mo Bowhunter had showed up too. They were supposed to meet us at McDonalds at 8:30 and follow us there. We waited for them for a while and then we gave them a wake up call. They said it was raining by them. I told them it had stopped here so the decided to make a late trip out of it.
Here is mobow shooting at a small deer. He told us it was 67 yards after the shot:). ![]() This is Paul shooting at the same deer. He said more like 92 yards.:D ![]() Here is Greg shooting at a havelina, at 50 yards I believe he said.:) ![]() We all started off shooting a little poorly. This was onlyGregs 6th 3D ever and Don and myself hadn't shot one since The Mosquito Plagued HNI shoot last June. But we all settled down and started ripping off 10's. The footing was trecherous after the rains all week, lots of slipping and sliding. But it was a good time and I had fun shooting with some neat friends from HNI. Greg even drove up last night from Jackson, MO and spent the night at my house, so he could sleep in a little longer this morning. Something about not being a morning person. We even ended up bringing home some HARDWARE. Greg won 1st place, he got a neat plaque, and I ended upfinishing in third, I got a not as neat plaque[:'(]. Not bad fora guy in his 6th 3D Tourney ever, nice shootin' Greg. By the way the Bowtechs beat up on the Hoyt and the Ross(Bowtech) today. :DP.S. Matt/PA, Greg says you better watch out he's gunning for you next.:D |

RE: Had some 3D fun today.
I shot today and shot 9 up. It's looking like that might be good enough to win it, hard to tell though, I'll know tomorrow. If I did sneak out a win that would be 3 in a row for me :). Open Trophy by the way.

RE: Had some 3D fun today.
Oh yeah, that was a blast! We had some folks shooting before and after us that need to do some serious research on etiquette....but all in all it was fantastic! This was the first shoot I've shot with my new set up, and multiple pins. I've shot a single pin for 5 years now. (hear the excuses buillding up here! :D) I've got to do some more practicing to find out my arrow drop and such, but I guess I didn't shoot too badly.
John was very kind in not mentioning my complete freakin MISS on a 23 yard chip shot.....Shot right under it. You know, release and drop your bow arm to see where you hit, that old chestnut?[:@] Yeah, I'll take a zero on that one. I did pull it together after that and busted out some 12's, but it wasn't enough. The Gaurdian's handed it to me today, but the Ross? Well.....let's just say my buddy Paul finished JUST under what I shot.....by about 30...[8D] That was only his second shoot ever though. How bout that stick stuck in the ground directly in front of the vitals? Gotta love that. We're sure the group in front of us did that. One shot was COMPLETELY covered, we didn't even shoot from the assigned stake, there was just no way. We even saw some live 3D targets running across the wheat field, about 6 of them I believe. They just wouldn't hold still though. And I think that small deer was just over 80 yards, so I just held my 60 yard pin a weeee bit high....;):D Really though, that was a ton of fun. Greg's a great guy to shoot with. Good attitude, and just wants to have fun. I really enjoyed shooting with him, and John both. Thanks guys, I really had a blast. Greg, we'll see you on the 12th! ;) John, you up for it buddy? |

RE: Had some 3D fun today.
It looks like a lot of fun. I'm glad that I found a place to try my hand at 3-D so I can start trying it, there's also a ton of stuff for my kids to do there also. I've never shot anywhere over 25 yards with my new bow and single pin setup so it should be pretty interesting, I may want to bring some extra arrows :D

RE: Had some 3D fun today.
Just curious, what was Greg's score?

Hey Don, I said my thanks to John in another thread I just wrote up... but I wanted you to know how much I enjoyed shooting with you and what a great time it was walking around the course with you guys.
That's actually the first shoot I've ever been able to shoot with anyone I knew... Well, other than the one a few weeks ago where I hooked up with Jeff Propst and his son Chris about 1/4 of the way into it. Sure was a lot of fun, and I look foward to giving you a rematch on the 12th!! |
RE: Had some 3D fun today.
Thats what its all about guys, good friends having fun :)
|
RE: Had some 3D fun today.
It's always great when we can read HNI'rs getting together for some fun. I remember what you posted about JMBuck's house in the "lets see your mounts" threads. And the food really sounds good. ;) |
RE: Had some 3D fun today.
Awesome
, sounds like you all had a great time. |
RE: Had some 3D fun today.
Very impressive shoting Greg, as well as John, and Don. I had my best round ever even tho in my head i felt i didnt shoot that good. It is amazing how that works out, but anyway I shot a 344. I was really proud of myself. I finally beat Mo Bowhnter this year, even tho he didnt show his best shooting.
I'm glad we got to meet up with you guys at the end of the shoot. You guys were probably waiting around for your trophies, and didnt know you were going to get to see us there.:D Either way I hope you guys had as much fun as we did for being a pretty nasty day! Remember in 2 weeks we got a shoot closer to Greg we can all go to. Pray for some sun! |
RE: Had some 3D fun today.
Sorry guys, ive never been to or shot a 3d, and it sounds like a great time. im just now getting comfortable with distance and the farthest ive shot was 50 yards. how far do you have to shoot during 3d's. is there like a newb line that is closer or do you just have to be prepared to shoot. im not trying to steal the thread this just got me very interested b/c it seems like a great time. thanks
|
RE: Had some 3D fun today.
Not stealing the thread at all... That's our intent: to get more people involved in this great sport of archery, and if we can bring in some more 3d shooters as well, that's a bonus.
There's generally two governing bodies for 3d shoots: IBO and ASA. Local clubs will generally adhere to the guidelines set forth by one of those two sanctioning organizations, even when it's not a "sanctioned shoot." Most people seem to start off in the Hunter Class, and eventually step up to MBR (Male Bowhunter Release) or Open Class. For ASA shoots, the max yardage is supposed to be 40 yards, and you're limited to a stabilizer no longer than 12" and four fixed pins. ASA does offer a bow novice class as well, with the max distance set at 30 yards. A person may compete in this class until they win $300, at which time they must move up to Hunter or something else. For IBO shoots, the max yardage is supposed to be 35 yards for Hunter Class. There is a "fudge factor" built in though which will allow targets to be set a couple yards past the max distance, to account for differences in rangefinders for the person setting up the range. Keep in mind, local clubs can do anything they want... especially if it's not a sanctioned shoot like a state qualifier. Today, we were generally going by ASA rules, and we shot in a class called Male Bowhunter Release. I know after we finished shooting from one stake, I pulled out my rangefinder (which I only ranged a couple targets AFTER we had all shot) and hit the target at 45 yards, so we had some targets that required a poke to get to. But don't let that scare you off... If you want to go toa shoot and just have fun, no one's going to care where you shoot from if you're not trying to take their trophy from them. :)You can also do what I did my first couple shoots: I knew I wouldn't be close to being in contention for podium finish, so I paid my money for a "fun shoot"... a lot of clubs have that set up and it's usually like $5 cheaper than the guys going for the hardware. I was just trying to get my feet wet, and I was only shooting against myself. I'd encourage you to give it a try... it's a blast, clubs usually serve great food at the end, and it's usually a good family atmosphere! |
RE: Had some 3D fun today.
I am glad you guys enjoyed yourself. I talked to my buddy Kirby Sunday night as I was driving back from Indiana. He told me the turn out was pretty poor, I am guess the weather. As Greg/MO stated, these shoots are a ton of fun and a great way to get out and practice to make sure you are golden come Nov when it really counts. I would suggest to everyone to get out and hit some shoots up and support your local archery clubs. I can tell you that there has been a lot of clubs fold because of lack of participation at these shoot in the last several years.
I wish I would have been around to shoot with everyone, it sounds like you guys had a great time. However, I was able to make a shoot up in Indiana with my dad and brother. Not only was I able to kick their butts (which felt great), but I was able to scrape a 1st place myself. |
RE: Had some 3D fun today.
yeah, im going not this sunday but next witha guy i know that shoots 3d and indoor. its in kentucky. i was thinking about going this weekend to the shoot in tell cityIL(i think) but i dont have my stabilizer yet and i want to practice a little bit more. im going to shoot the hunter class, and i suppose its ibo rules b/c he said it is 35 yrd give or take a few. i could probably shoot the open and do ok with a range finder but not w/out one. not yet. im pretty excited. thanks guys.
