Within the first 2 or 3 days. Get their dew claws removed, too.

Two to three days is when someone docks and does dew claws. The Question is why do it? I'm not some PETA guy, but I have never understood why one would dock. Dew claws I do. Either do them at 2 days or have them torn off in the field.

RE: When should a dogs tail be docked?

The Original Mountain Cur is trademarked by dewclaws and naturally bobbed tails. Not all of them have them, but they resemble the old time curs. Hunters love it when they are born with natural dewclaws and double dewclaws becuase it more closely matches foundation stock of the old time pioneer mountain cur. In a bench show at a hunt, if you have two final curs and one has natural bob tail and dews, it will supposedly get the ribbon everytime. But, bobtails and dewclaws don't tree squirrels and coons. My pup had his tail docked when he was a few days old, but I wouldn't have cared one way or another if it was bobbed or not. Beagles get bobbed sometimes I hear to protect their tails in the briars. They say a beagle's tail can get pretty bloodied up in the briars. Other than that, I don't know the reasons besides people liking it that way.

same reason why some people wear rings in there ears and nose and (?????????[:o]?????????).other places.what you like
just a personal prefference.also some dogs work better(Tail gets Bloody) some are for the breed (bull dogs) because they use to fight them all around, another dog would catch by the tail.depends on the breed and it's history.

some dock at the base(1 joint) others two joints ; others dock 3/4?????

Howdy Folks! ........I reckon yall can call me a new Bee around hear but I will try to share my 2 cents worth on the question asked.

I like to dock the tails and remove the dewclaws on the 2nd day and no later than the 3rd day. My German Shorthair Pointer pups will end up with half of their oringinal tails and no dew-claws after finishing the process.
