E-collar questions
Hello
I would like some information on E collars. I am not looking to use it on the dog right now but looking for one after training him and the up coming season. I have been looking all over the net. So I have some questions for the seasoned hunters here. I know I want one with a beeper, And I would think that a 1/2 mile range would be good. If he gets any father out then that I need to work on his training more. lol Do you really need 16 levels of shock. From my experience is that you only need a little bit. So that leaves me with witch ones have good lifespan? Is 1/2 mile range ok? Any one know of a good place to buy one? I cant believe the prices of these things. Any thing I am over looking here. Only planning on having one dog. It looks like some of the collars have the wires in the color is this right? Seams like bad idea there. Thanks for the info guys |
RE: E-collar questions
I agree with you that a half mile range would be plenty. One rule to follow would be never shock your dog if you can't see it. I feel that a 300 yard range would be plenty as well. Most dogs won't work out past 100 yards. Cabela's would be a good place to buy a collar, or Bass pro shops. Innotek has a good collar I hear, but I have a 9 year old collar and it still works good, although I am planning on updating this year. I would also look into spending the extra money and buying a beeper trainer in one. A beeper is almost a necessity, there are times in heavy cover that a beeper will help you find a dog on point.
Good luck and Happy Hunting |
RE: E-collar questions
I use the Tri-Tronics Classic 70. Ilike the Tri-tronics collar going around the reciever instead of being held by the contact points plus I feel they give a more constant contact with the dog. I have got two friends that lost their Innotek collars out in the field and never found them that s a lot $$$ out of their pockets and any collar is not cheap.
Good Luck |
RE: E-collar questions
I bought a brand new SportDog 1200 on Ebay for under $100. 1/2 mile range and 8 level settings but I only use level 1 and I've used level 3 to deter deer and rabbit chasing on my bird dog.
On the 16 (or however many) levels of stimulation...you've got a high and a low. The other settings are just scattered in between. So if your collar has 6 levels and mine has 60, the high and the low are pretty much the same on both. Read up on them. They've really improved my training but you can't use them in frustration or (as said earlier) if you can't see the dog. Nothing like shocking a dog that's on point. You don't want them to shy from point. Good luck. |
RE: E-collar questions
I would reccomend Tri-Tronics collars. They have a great warrenty and customer service. I have had zero problems with the ones I have owned. If you are going to be a one dog owner I would look at the Sport Series, they start @ #50 and go up from there depending on what bells and whistles you want on them as well as range. The Sport Series is easy to clip on your vest or wear around your neck.

RE: E-collar questions
I agree with TYLEETESS, I have the Tri-Tronics Sport 65, 1/2 mile range, beeper, etc., works great., Had it out in S. Dakota with a long ranging dog with no problems. I think I paid about $350.00. I wish I would have bought a two dog unit though.

First off please excuse any screw ups in this reply process because this is the first time I've ever attempted this before. I know that most people never give their own name on these exchanges but I feel you'll trust my reply a little bit more in this case if I do. My name is John Seroczynski and I'm the National Sales & Marketing Manager for DT Systems the second oldest manufacturer of E-collars in the world. (Almost 25 years) I'd like you also to know that the people at Hunting Net.com have been put in charge of upgrading the D.T. System's web page and it's better than ever. Our "Ask the Expert" section has been a great success in its first couple of weeks. I hope you'll to take a look at it in your spare time and also feel free to reply with any suggestions. Now for your questions about E-collar for pointing dogs. The replied input was good but maybe I can kick in a bit more help on this issue. Let me address some of the replies and questions. Levels of stimulation: We all know that once someone gets their first E-collar they pretty much settle on the range of stimulation that best fits their dog's level of reaction. D T has a number of different collar series which have stimulation levels of 8, 9, 16, 20, 50 &60. The thing you first should know is that the maximum stimulation level for all of our units is VERY close to the same regardless of the number of stimulation levels. There are a number of reason we give the dog owner so many levels to choose from. The first of which is simply because we have the ability and technology to do so and maybe the most important is because hardly a day goes by without some consummer asking us for even more than we currently have avaliable. All dogs have different tolerance levels and having many levels to choose from gives the trainer / owner the ability to fine tune and custom fit their collar of choice to their pet. If a dog is running accross the highway, running deer, fighting with another dog or doing anything that may endanger him or someone else the owner needs to be able to jump to a much higher level of situation to hopefully head off any danger. Now for what D. T. Systems may have to offer. I just arrived home (3:30 AM today) from the annual SHOT SHOW which is the shooting sport's industrie's annual showing of what's new in the outdoor world. Naturally almost every collar company in the world was there to showcase their current and new products for 2005. The timing of your request for help could not have been better because D. T. themselve's showcased our latest pointing dog collar with beeper. Model # EZT 5000 a one-dog system & the EZT 5002 which is a two dog system. FEATURES: Our "EXCLUSIVE LONG RANGE FM / DIGITAL ANTENNA SYSTEM" 1. Waterproof collar 2. Rechargeable collar & transmitter 3. A 1-mile range (We have "many" bird hunters that require even greater ranges) 4. Nick stimulation & Continuous stimulation with an 8 second safety delay. 5. A long range beeper that depending on wind conditions can be heard from as far away as 450 yards and it requires"NO" internal battery 6. A Lifetime Warranty on parts 7. And a heavey duty polly / nylon carrying case. Now for the best part. How about a retail price of $299.99 for the one dog, one mile collar with beeper? and $449.99 for the two dog with the same features. The new EZT 5000 series was one of the hottest items at this year's Shot show. You won't find it on the web page yet because it was kept under raps until the show. Please feel free to contact me through my E-mail address with any questions. If you give me your phone numbers I promise you I'll return your call AsAP. Here is my E-mail address. 5. A long range beeper that depending on wind conditions can be heard from as far away
as 450 yards and it requires"NO" internal battery Okay, I'll give. What do you mean "NO" "internal" battery? I have an Innotek beeper that's powered by a battery in the "reciever" at the other end of the collar and I have a Tri-Tronics with the battery in the beeper box. Not sure I like the Innotek style. |
RE: E-collar questions
Silver GSP
I own 3 different collars and I will give you the short story on them. The first collar I purchased about 6 years ago which is an Innotek TT-100A. This is Innotek's Beeper/Trainer combo for 1 dog. I trained my britt. with it and the collar worked well until the battery got low. On occasion when the battery was low the collar would go off on its own. Obviously not a good thing when you are training. Overall the collar has served me well but the transmitter is junk IMO. Not built very tough for the field. Will run you about 200-250 depending on where you get it. Collar #2 I again purchased an Innotek for my Deutsch Drahthaar (GWP) It is Innotek's top of the line model Command Series 16000 Track and Train. The main reason I purchased this collar is that I could run both of my collars off of 1 transmitter. It has more stimulation level options than the first collar but it caused me a ton of trouble. The original collar crapped out because when the dog scratch his neck he would shred the collar. The second collar would start stimulating the dog if I pushed the button or not. To boot I didn't know it was stimulating the dog because the light on the collar didn't indicate that it was. This set me back about a month in my training but we were able to make it through. I also had other problems with sycronization that I wont go into. Bottom line. After 5, yes 5 exchanges with innotek I have a working collar. (great customer service) During one of those exchanges I went out and purchased a tri-tronics upland special. I love this collar. It has easy changing stimulation levels especially at the low end where I used it to force break for retriving. Both the beeper and the stimulation box are removable. I did like the beeper features on the Innotek better than the tri-tronics but it serves its purpose come hunting season. Nearly everyone I talk to in my club uses tri-tronics products and many have had their units for many years. Others I know have dt collars, dogtra collars and the new sport dog units. I haven't heard any complaints and actually some realy good comments about the sport dog 2400. I have dogtra quail launchers and they work excellent. My advice would be to go tri-tronics they are made in the good ole USA. I buy all my dog traing supplies at Lion County Supply. www.lcsupply.com Good prices and excellent service. Good luck training for the hunt Huntermag |
RE: E-collar questions
Every trainer I know uses a Dogtra or a Tri-Tronics both are good collars. Really don't know what use a beeper can be, and agree 1/2 mile range is all you need. Get a model with a waterproof transmitter. I bought the Dogtra 1200 for I thought is was the best buy.
